Amtrak has declared war on LD trains

Wow, talk about one of the worst articles I’ve ever read. From invoking Juneteenth Day, and then completely fabricating what the first amendment of the constitution is about. I couldn’t even read past the bolded text at the start, it was so bad. Railway Age seriously needs to take that article...

Way to cut down losses on long distance trains

Have we stopped talking about ways to cut down Amtrak losses? I don’t even keno what this latest string of posts is even about. Host railroads or something?

Chicago Travel Order - 14 day quarantine

September is two months away. Look back two months ago at the states where the quarantine order now applies. Where were their numbers back then? If this COVID pandemic has taught me anything, it is to no bother planning travel more than a few days out, and don’t assume that travel to be much...

Amtrak CEO live stream broadcast Monday

The week of Thanksgiving is busy. One to two weeks before then? Not at all. Also, in between Thanksgiving and Christmas also tends to be fairly low as well. People have work, kids have school (to the extent that any of that will be relevant this year, and the extent to which it isn’t...

Could states ditch Amtrak for a private contractor?

Kind of, and no (at least not that I’m aware of). Indiana went with Iowa Pacific to provide equipment and on-board service for the Hoosier State. However, Amtrak was always the operator, with their engineers and conductors running the train. The Adirondack has, as far as I can tell, always...

Way to cut down losses on long distance trains

There might be an argument here for going to a VIA-style of operation & crewing, where the conductor and engineer are in the locomotive, handling all of the railroad operational matters, and the train is staffed by, essentially, all OBS, with (I believe) a “train manager” as the main person in...

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak Food Service Discussion

Maybe I’m misreading what you’re saying, but how is it possible to pay at Amazon Go using cash? I’ve visited several in Chicago and SF and, as far as I can tell, there is no mechanism whatsoever to pay with any method other than the app, since there actually is no “check out” process, per se...

    Anderson to AA?

Because a gourmet chef would totally have experience running a multi-billion-dollar organization with dozens of labor unions, 20,000+ employees, and heavy political influence on its operation. Yep, makes sense.

    Amtrak Website Not User Friendly....

OP clearly states he’s trying to figure out how to use cash in the very first sentence.

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

The question is what would the net cost/benefit be of dual-mode locomotives vs. standard EMUs that become regular trailers pulled by a diesel locomotive when off wire. With Virginia taking steps to electrify the corridor south of DC towards Richmond, the long-term costs of building in DMU...

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

The NEC is by far large enough and busy enough to handle a fleet that is specialized to it. In fact, it already does (the Acela). There's no reason for it to be hamstrung by some random need for the equipment to be able to work just as well in Los Angeles or Oklahoma City. The Northeast is...

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

At the risk of being pedantic, jis said California cars, not California Cars. California, in this case, being used as an adjective to describe the common noun “cars.”

Would Viewliners like these be possible (Or even Useful)?

A sleeper has a capacity of 30 only if you put two people in every room. This effectively doubles the cost of accommodating a solo traveler.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

I take that is being the projected revenue loss related to COVID from lower ridership and not really having anything to do with how much the network costs to operate. Remember, this is the supplemental request on top of the normal request they submitted for next year. So the regular...

Number of Train Sets Used for Each Long Distance Train?

I don’t know the specific amounts, but in many cases the fees are just applied against what Amtrak pays the host railroads in track access. So, the better the OTP, the more Amtrak pays, the worse the OTP, the less Amtrak pays.
