Yes, odd numbered rooms are usually on the right. The 12 car has always been oriented the same direction as the 11 car when I've ridden it. The reason I've heard is the vestibule had to be next to the diner since the diner does not have a vestibule.

I have always booked sleepers by phone in any case, since I have always been picky about location. Getting in the base sleeper is just one more criteria (although a harder requirement than my other preferences).

Not sure about the status of the washer in the Oakland Coach Yard. I know for sure the windows on the Lake Shore Limited are not cleaned and have not been for years. If there is any sun on them, they're damn near opaque.
