    Lake Shore Limited discussion

The half-cafe does make more sense for ALB-BOS, but I would be curious as to whether the business class product makes more sense for in and out of NYP - since it has to be one or the other. For what it's worth, when business class service was removed from the LSL in July 2022, the field on the...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion

I'm sure this won't happen, but now that the Venture business class cars are entering service, and Amtrak presumably will have some slack in the half-cafe, half-BC car fleet, it would be nice to see the LSL and the Cardinal run with both the cafe car and the half cafe, half BC car. Beyond...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion

I see your location is Ithaca, NY. If you're on spring break and coming from Syracuse...are you an Ithaca College student? I'm an IC alum (Park School) myself. To answer your questions if you haven't departed yet, 49 vs 449 makes no difference. Likewise, 48 vs. 448 doesn't matter unless...

    Capitol Limited discussion

I'll be taking my first Capitol Limited trip on 4/16, Harper's Ferry to Chicago. I'm guessing there will still be just one coach car given how fast this train has been selling out. With assigned seating presumed for this route (that's what I've always read), does anyone know if the conductors...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

Here I would make the argument that the world has changed in the last few years, and continues to change. In that Amtrak, has an opportunity to get this right and align itself with where the world seems headed. 1. Airfares are really high right now. I am planning a Chicago-to-Boston trip in...

    Coach restrooms

To each their own. I would be much less focused on the clothing a person is wearing, which has no bearing on anything, and more on their behavior. My biggest problem with long distance Amtrak travel in coach is rather well-dressed people talking on their phones for hours on end. But I presume...

Consequences of missing second leg of one-way ticket?

Thanks to everyone for the feedback. While I understand I could change a CHI-PHL reservation to CHI-WAS, with the Capitol Limited sell-outs, it would cost me more to modify my ticket late in the game than to just skip the final leg.

Consequences of missing second leg of one-way ticket?

If I booked a ticket Chicago to Philadelphia, on the Capitol Limited to DC and transferring to the Northeast Regional in DC to Philly, are there any consequences if my travel plans change and I simply don't get on the transfer in DC? Presuming no checked baggage and no implications for a return...

    Chicago Union Station experiences

At this point, bus service is pretty consistent (as tracked by the CTA Bus Tracker) and ghost buses and trains are a lot more infrequent than in the past. Taking the bus from Union Station to the shrine is eminently reasonable. As a Chicago resident, I generally feel safe on buses. I wouldn't...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

Hopefully one very easy solution here is what's been implemented on the Siemens Venture coaches for Amtrak Midwest - the bathrooms are in a vestibule that is separated from the coach by a sliding glass door. My experience on the Lake Shore Limited - and I've had a conversation with one crew...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

A few random thoughts as I catch up on this thread: - I doubt Americans would trust 3-5 other bunkmates in a Euro style sleeping compartment. Amtrak's current system in coach of grouping passengers by destination is helpful - for example, on my recent CHI-ROC trip, the first group that would...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

Thanks for the information. The Siemens Venture seats are cited to have a width of 19.1 inches. Source: Faster Wi-Fi but slimmer seats: Here’s a first look on board Amtrak’s newest trains - The Points Guy This board cites Superliner seats as "ranging from 20 to 23 inches," which probably...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

Seat width in coach for long distance trains is going to be an interesting issue for Amtrak to address (or not address). Perhaps someone with available schematics can address - are the Siemens Venture coaches in the Midwest representative of maximum seat width for 2 x 2 seating with full ADA...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

It seems it would need to be the other way around - superliners would need to be modified to connect to a single level car.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

There's no reason at this point not to add a true business class service to long distance trains (something between coach and sleeper). While I'm not opposed to more service, as a LSL passenger, the split in Albany actually can be a bit of a nice break to get off the train and get some fresh...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion

I have experienced this as well on the LSL. I think it's particularly noticeable eastbound because it's occurring at the point in time where you're trying to get to sleep, essentially east of South Bend. While I am no expert, I've assumed it is the train switching tracks but doing so at a...

    Chicago Union Station experiences

One thing I've been critical of is Amtrak's signage, or lack thereof, at Chicago Union Station. I was pleased to see large signs are now posted that indicate which trains board from the Great Hall and which trains board from the gate areas, since passengers were previously just supposed to...

    How to get seats together

I doubt this will be an issue for you - there is significant passenger traffic from Boston, Providence and New Haven disembarking at Penn Station, so odds are when you board you will find an open pair of seats without too much of an issue. On a November BOS-NYP trip I took on the regional...

    Amtrak major delay protocols

I was interested in learning about why Amtrak operates as it does in the event of major/catastrophic delays, like with the Auto Train situation. - Why does Amtrak not back up the stalled train to the nearest station, so that passengers can freely disembark? I imagine there are liability...

    Future Amtrak sleeper ideas

Not to go too far off topic, but Amtrak is currently missing out on revenue from people like me that, as a solo traveler, cannot justify the cost of a roomette but would be willing to spend somewhere between the cost of coach and roomette. Or more colloquially, a business class product.
