    MBTA issues

Job interview: "So, if we put you in charge of the MBTA, how will you fix it and turn it into a world class system? And how long would that take and how much money do you think you'll need?"

Amtrak changed my accommodation and may miss connection

True enough. When people ask about rooms on trains, I say that Amtrak is a strange mix of cruise ship and camping, and you never know which one you'll get.

Amtrak changed my accommodation and may miss connection

I find it a sad reflection on Amtrak that we need to dedicate four pages of discussion of what should be a routine and enjoyable train trip. And there are probably hundreds of other people with similar misadventures that don't report here, and will likely never ride Amtrak again.

And back in the bad news category, an analysis of the slow zones by the Globe shows that a red line train takes an average of 78 minutes longer for a round-trip ride Ashmont, Alewife, Ashmont than if the trains were run at the original design speed. Not that any sane person would do that.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I ride the Downeaster quite often, and love the BC/Cafe car combination. Especially since BC is often just a few dollars more, and you get free non-alcoholic beverages. But I understand the situation on the LSL and the need to serve the entire train.

    MBTA issues

There is a strange lack of front page stories about the "T" this morning, so dropped by with an unrelated report. There is a new book out with an overly complete history of Boston Transit. I am in awe of this book. In almost 600 pages, it covers Boston...

    Lake Shore Limited discussion

I totally agree about having a cafe car for both sections, but the lack of a cafe on the NYC leg worked to my advantage a long time ago. Anybody else remember the wine and cheese reception when leaving Chicago? I happened to be on a CHI-NYC LSL, and went looking for cafe service south of...

Runway Incursion and near miss at JFK

It will take forever just to get the paperwork together to approve a modified CVR, much less to replace the entire fleet. I know that flight entertainment systems are not cockpit-grade quality, but if I can internet up and down all over the world from a plane, don't see why they can't add a VOIP.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022-23)

I'm sure some regulatory agency would find a reason they can't do dome cars. Our loss.

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023)

Several press reports that full Adirondack service to Montreal will start April 3. I'd actually like to buy a ticket in early April, but it doesn't seem to be in the Amtrak computer system. Anyone have any idea when we will be able to reserve...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I'd settle for a train that arrived at the time shown on the printed schedule :) However, I do have to give credit to the return of decent dining service.

    New York Penn Station v3.0

That story in the New Yorker is amazing. I thought I knew the gory details, but the author really fleshed it out, including what a &*! the MSG owner is. If you have any interest in the future of Penn Station, you need to read it. I have a subscription, so read it on paper, but it seems to be...

    California Zephyr discussion

Welcome, Sgreenphoto! The CZ is an amazing trip, and I really hope it works out well for you. I've taken the full trip a number of times, and when I lived in San Francisco I had the luxury of taking a short overnight trip up to Reno and back the next day. It's a shame that Amtrak is so...

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

I've only had very nice agents in Boston. The last time they encouraged me to load up on snacks for the trip. The old photographs are so wonderful that I'm sure some bureaucrat will replace them.

And if you are taking the Acela to Washington, beg, borrow or steal an upgrade coupon for first class. Worth it for the free food and drink!
