Advice needed for detraining at New London, CT

Oh thank you so much! I had forgotten that New Haven has redcaps! Yes, I’ll ask for one to meet me on the platform and walk with me into the station and also to take me to the Acela. I can move around okay—it’s just that the cataract makes me feel unstable and then I start getting panicky and...

Advice needed for detraining at New London, CT

Well I did just fine in New London the other day, thanks to advice from on here and a nice young conductor who explained exactly where the steps would be, helped me off the train, and showed me exactly where the road crossing was. Plus all the other passengers were crossing as well, so I could...

Reistrup questions safety of Amfleet equipment on NEC at 125 mph.

Yes, I’ve met him, too—at the RUN meeting in Springfield, Massachusetts, a few years ago. Energetic chap. He may very well be a contributing writer for Railway Age—not on staff, but with enough pieces written for them that he almost is.

Reistrup questions safety of Amfleet equipment on NEC at 125 mph.

Isn’t David a staff writer for Railway Age? If a staff person, or even a regular contributor, wrote it, I think there’s a very logical and quite innocent reason why it was posted then pulled. Not often, but once in a while, a document can end up in the wrong pile (computer file these days) and...

“Contributing editor” can mean a freelance writer or, perhaps in this case, even a PR writer. So not a staff writer. A good lesson for all magazine editors and publishers to scrutinize everything that comes in from the outside carefully.

Amtrak changed my accommodation and may miss connection

You have had quite an adventure from beginning to end! Thanks for taking us along!

Reistrup questions safety of Amfleet equipment on NEC at 125 mph.

I immediately saw a noun-verb agreement error: “speeds...poses” instead of “speeds...pose.” I don’t know enough train details to spot the factual errors, but when I see a basic grammar error in an article, I assume it has not been edited properly, if at all. The editing process should include...

PTC "Server disruption" service issue (March 2023)

Could this affect the northeast corridor? I have a trip from NJ to Mystic, CT on a regional on Monday. If there are PTC issues, I don’t mind finding hotel space for a few more days there, but I’d definitely like to get there!

Amtrak changed my accommodation and may miss connection

I didn’t realize that—thanks. A bit dreary up here in the northeast today compared to the Florida he started from, but he has his bedroom and made the train connection, so I bet he doesn’t mind a bit of a dreary view!

Amtrak changed my accommodation and may miss connection

Oh good point. Well if he’s on the other side, he won’t be too disappointed.

Amtrak changed my accommodation and may miss connection

Oh I’m so glad you made it! 😊 This was more suspenseful than a mystery/suspense novel! In a book, you can skip to the last chapter to find out what happens. In real life, we had to wait to find out!😁 And I’m so glad you got your bedroom. Are you on the river (left side) or other side?

    Crescent and CONO, March 2023

So glad the CONO crew and trip have been so good. If you have to take two trains, it’s really nice when the better one comes second!

Amtrak changed my accommodation and may miss connection

I agree—it does seem tight to me, too. And I do wish Amtrak would stop playing musical chairs with people’s accommodations. At least you did get an explanation. Is your roomette a new one or the old one? At least the Viewliner roomettes are a bit roomier and less claustrophobic than the...

Train Daddy (Andy Byford) is coming to Amtrak!

Nope. I don’t like it, either. I’ll just call him Andy.😊

Train Daddy (Andy Byford) is coming to Amtrak!

I agree completely. I’ve been hoping for ages that Andy would come to Amtrak, but as the CEO. Although he might have ended up like a couple of other good Amtrak CEOs—hired, then fired because they cared and were competent and tried to make things better. And then had a locomotive named after...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

That’s a shame. Yes, like many things (in hotels as well as on trains) that made travel feel a bit more classy and elegant, it seems to have disappeared from this utilitarian world we now live in.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Years ago, the Carolinian did have that, and it was wonderful. The cafe car was next to the BC car, and the attendant would come through with a cold drinks cart but would also get you coffee if you wanted. I haven’t been on the Carolinian for a while, but I’m sure that service is long gone. By...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Talking of making sense, I’ve always wondered why the cafe car isn’t put next to Business Class on the Regionals. Essentially, to get your free cup of coffee, you are paying extra to sit at least two cars away from the cafe car and having to walk back with your coffee through a moving train...

    Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges

I’m not sure the red doors in back of the orange chairs would be my design choice, but if they had coffee I could deal with clashing colors.😁 I’ll be there in early May and will see it firsthand and will reserve final judgment til then.
