    RIP Hyperloop?

A few test tracks have been built at various research centers, but as far as I am aware there is no operational hyperloop anywhere.

    Trains in rural areas

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I guess public transit is not an all-or-nothing affair. Even if you still have to drive part of the way, it can still make perfect sense to take the train. I should know, I made the same argument a couple of weeks ago in Auto Train Why not more routes?

    Trains in rural areas

I apologize if this comes across as insensitive, but as someone from a major metropolitan area, I struggle to understand the value that trains provide to people living in rural areas. Even living in the suburbs of a major city, it is difficult to get anywhere without a car, and since public...

    Train Consists

Apparently, the extra car between the locomotive and the baggage car is for Siemens engineers in case the new long-distance Chargers experience any technical difficulties en route—which they have, which explains why there were five locomotives on the eastbound yesterday and as of 6:00 p.m. today...

Gas prices where you are located?

$5.60/gallon. I assume that by "$" you mean Australian Dollars and not U.S. Dollars? I admit that I had to look up where "Oz" is…

How many stations have same code as the airport? (like LAX)

IATA codes are interesting. ORD used to be known as Orchard Field, hence the IATA code. Then it was renamed to O'Hare, but they kept the old IATA code. Recently, there was a proposal to rename it to Barack Obama International Airport. Maybe they should change the IATA code to OOO...

    Acela Mid-Week Trains Filling Up

I can't speak for the Acela, but I noticed that my hometown commuter station lot is fuller than it's been in a while. I think people are starting to get sick of working from home.

    Changes to Your Upcoming Trip

Thanks, jebr! I appreciate the information. I think I will take the Amtrak bus from Union Station to Homewood since that would save me the hassle of having to go to Millennium Station or Van Buren Street.

How many stations have same code as the airport? (like LAX)

I don't think the problem has to do with computer memory. Amtrak station codes are three letters long and 26³ = 17,576 which is more than enough to cover every station. Two letters (676 possible codes) would still be enough but then Amtrak would have to be more creative.

    Changes to Your Upcoming Trip

Thanks, Bob! I wish they would just say that in the email. I would call the number but I lost my voice so that would be rather silly. Just a couple more questions: I received a second identical email from Amtrak today to which the following line has been added: No problem, I've ridden Metra...

    Changes to Your Upcoming Trip

Just received the following email from Amtrak: Does this mean there will be a bus instead? I am happy to take the bus but I have never boarded a bus from Chicago Union Station before.

    Ideas about increasing Amtrak ridership

You can make easily changes on the fly using the "New Search" button at the top of the page. It's not perfect, but it works. I agree. As someone who's not from Boston, I don't know what the difference is between North Station, South Station, and Back Bay Station. Where does the Acela stop...

    Ideas about increasing Amtrak ridership

Buying train tickets on is little different than booking an airline flight or buying a bus ticket: Select one-way or round-trip Type in the city of origin Type in the destination city Enter the date(s) of travel Select the number of travelers Let Amtrak figure out the best routes...

Resumption of Amtrak service to Canada (2022-2023 Q2)

I apologize if this is a stupid question, by why doesn't Amtrak check passports at the point of departure? I understand that not everyone on the train is going to Canada, but for the people who are, wouldn't it make more sense to check passports before boarding, rather than on the train?
