    What should Amtrak change?

Bolivia? Not been there. Brazil, yes, and the aircraft accident was in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. Other than that untoward happenstance, I enjoyed Brazil. I missed being born there by 10 days.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

At least if you are going CHI-LAX the Eagle sleeper becomes a Sunset sleeper, and sanity is returned to the dining experience. As to the CHI-SAS, on our trip ending Sunday, the FSA had to close the snack bar, heat the glop in the galley, come upstairs and serve the patrons, and deliver to the...

Comparison of Amtrak vs. other transport mode

I am sometimes of mixed emotions, like the old joke about watching one's mother in law driving over the cliff in one's new car. I love my Teslas, and when I have a trip planned, if I can make an AMTRAK itinerary, I go by train. Otherwise, I drive for about 5-7 cents a mile. Sometimes I can rent...

Last Summer trip on the Eagle an New Flex

My daughter has the salmon. Not my cup of tea but she says it is pretty good. The Chicken parm is tolerable, although usually squashed together. Do yourself a favor... Go to the diner and eat, show your support for the FSAs, who scarecely have time to deliver to the rooms. You can order the...

Comparison of Amtrak vs. other transport mode

All that may be statistically correct. But I will take trains whenever I can. They seldom explode or fall from 5 or so miles in the air. True, when things go sideways on a train, bad things happen. Your odds of surviving an event are better, once the event happens. I rode a 707 down in Brasilia...

Comparison of Amtrak vs. other transport mode

I don't know about your data source, but I disagree. I've a much better chance of surviving a collision in a train than in any plane. I am old (76), and drive cross country JFTHOI. I've been known to drive my Tesla to a city where I can get on an AMTRAK, then drive back home. (DAL to NOL -...

Last Summer trip on the Eagle an New Flex

Well, Christi and I are headed to Chicago on Tuesday, DAL-CHI on the poor, mistreated Eagle. We'll return arriving Sunday. Last trip of the year for her. I may be accompanying my Aunt from DAL-TRE later this month. Might get a return on the Crescent out of the deal. I keep hearing rumors that...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

That's the best news I've heard since that Shore Patrolman fell down the forward torpedo room hatch!

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

I look forward to your posts - it is refreshing to hear something with SOME authority. I really look forward to the banishing of FLEX meals and some semblance of real dining as a man in the desert looks forward to a glass of ice water. Pardon me if I missed earlier posts - are you saying there...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

Salt and other ingredients are an attempt to "enhance" the flavors lost in the freezing, and an attempt to make the cheap ingredients seem to taste better. Lots of chemicals are toxic in large quantities but salubrious when used in very small quantities - even salt.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

Cryovacing, par cooking, and some other shortcuts are more prevalent in the food industry than you might think. Some of the items done properly in that fashion can be tasty. Powdered eggs, powdered milk, no. The precooked bacon must be heated properly or you get jerky. Instant grits - well, that...

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

The Texas Eagle is still FLEX garbage between Chicago and San Antonio. If you are riding the Eagle through to Los Angeles, the Sunset Diner is Diner service and is quite good.

Comparison of Amtrak vs. other transport mode

I flew at least one round trip a week for about 30 years. Domestic and International. Eastern hosed me big time once, and I swore I would never ride them again. Couple of years later, I got to the airport late for an EWR-San Juan flight. My problem. Eastern counter was next to my counter...

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

FB, OM... I just saw a YouTube article on a Software Defined Radio USB dongle for $50 or so. Think I will get one and see how that works. All our Microwave gear at Univision was SDRs. Pain in the caboose to set up, but were flexible as all getout. 73

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

Yes. My Yaesu VX 5 scanned a lot faster, but was wayy more expensive. I am a licensed Radio Operator (HAM - W5VD) and use my Yaesu to talk on 2Meter and other repeaters. I usually use the Baofeng or the Wouxon for railroad monitoring. Also, no matter the speed of the channel scan, it can false...

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

Look on Amazon. There are many inexpensive Asian knockoffs of transcievers, BAOFENG is one brand that comes to mind. I have one. If you are worried, just use tthe menu and disable the transmit function. Et Voila'! You now have a scanner!

Scanners, Radio and other such tech inquiries

Most intelligent radios know when to switch from AM to FM depending on the band selected. All my scanners and transcievers do. Some of my Yaesus allow selection of RX mode.
