Amtrak Dining and Cafe service discussion 2024 Q1

I'm fine with paper napkins instead of cloth for Breakfast and Lunch, but plastic is pretty cheap. Is that just the crew not wanting to bother with collecting the silver ware?

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

I don't think every car has to be a bi-level, I'm just saying they can't just replace the existing fleet with venture cars and have the appeal. If the bi-levels can be used on the entire route, I could see them becoming the Prestige Class, with one being a lounge / cafe for coach passengers and...

Preferential treatment for California Zephyr w/American View (10004)?

While it's possible your train is getting VIP treatment - this is not unusual. I've been on plenty of Amtrak trains where this is the case.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Well they function as day coaches, full-service dining cars, and lounges with viewing area. Of course, that's how they are physically used on the RM and Alaska RR, they could be set up with alternate interiors as needed.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

What a strange way to describe one of the nicest trains operating in the world.

    Northeast Regional discussion

I meant it doesn't take time away from the equipment being able to be used. You can have a couple of employees turn seats in the time it takes to perform a terminal air brake test. The idea that not turning seats is the reason they can add departures is a crazy claim - that's my point.

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024 Q1

Maybe we can make it a law for passenger trains too? I could actually see a reasoning too, since in an Emergency it could certainly effect rescue efforts.

    Northeast Regional discussion

I wonder what daily departures are being added? And of course, time isn't the issue, it doesn't have to take any time to turn seats, the real reason is they are probably able to eliminate a few hours of employee time.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

ah... there might be some clearances East of Jasper... didn't really think about that.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service discussion 2024 Q1

I've never understood the issue with the plastic plates they use in the dining car. Visually they look just like the China plates and it doesn't really effect the experience that much. To me, drinking wine out of a plastic glass effects the experience way more. I remember riding the Empire...

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Could Stadler make cars for VIA? If VIA wants the Canadian to be an experience they will need really nice cars like the Colorado Railcar / Stadler Bi-Levels. Those Venture cars ain't gonna sell tickets.

The economics of budget airlines don't make sense

There is a HUGE difference between a 1-hour and a 4-hour flight. If it's less than 1 hour to a little more than 2 hours I won't worry too much if it's a bit uncomfortable, but more than 2.5 hours I'm gonna start looking at 1st Class for sure. The only airline I've ever flown that didn't offer...

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024 Q1

There have been a few branded airplanes for Disney (maybe some others as well) but that was part of specific travel promotions. And the windows were cut out so they didn't affect the passengers.

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024 Q1

I sure hope so. Wrap presents not trains!!!!! From a marketing and branding perspective I feel like full-train advertising wraps cheapen the brand as well. When you make your new train that you are advertising as being "modern" and "higher-speed" look like a rolling billboard it sends a...

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2024 Q1

I hope so... I made certain that my voice was heard when I rode a wrapped train. It's also been part of the reason I haven't ridden the Orlando section yet... I don't want to pay that money to ride a wrapped train, would just assume take Amtrak or Red Coach.

Can Union Pacific bring back their own passenger trains?

Amtrak did not work well with Iowa Pacific - that's why the cars were mostly on the City of New Orleans and not on more popular routes - they wanted to hit the New York market but Amtrak wouldn't work with them. Even then they managed to make a name for themselves and fill up the cars. The...

Can Union Pacific bring back their own passenger trains?

When I rode the Canadian this summer there were several sleeper accommodations available the day of. I kept my $200 coach ticket instead of paying $1,200 for an upper berth. Bonus.. the coach dome is ideal for watching the signals drop, a fun memory as a kid riding the old amtrak City of New...

Canadians arriving at same time in Edmonton

That's what happened to me on the way into Jasper - we had to sit on the siding right outside of Jasper until the Westbound left. VIA has there own ways of doing things haha.

    Best Vintage Rides in East

They really have. Couple years ago I managed to visit during the "RPO" weekend and got to see the RPO car demonstrated. Really cool - I've never seen one in operation before. Make sure to check out the "event weekends" and try to hit one of those. I think last year they ran steam trains all...

    Best Vintage Rides in East

It's not in the East but the Illinois Railway Museum in Union IL (outside of Chicago) has some equipment from that time. The Zephyr set, is an articulated streamline set, the Electroliner will be in operation again soon, and they have a lovely set of CB&Q Bi-Levels. That's in addition to...
