Early boarding for irrop of City of New Orleans on March 20?

Amtrak doesn't tell you that there is a 1:30 AM train when trying to book #59 on 3/20. You'd think in this circumstance the # 1059 would popup but because it leaves on the 21st it doesn't. Yet another poor way to maximize ridership.

Baggage and roomette questions (Empire Builder)

I hope your son and daughter-in-law really, really appreciate your efforts. I agree with Penny - ship out most of it.

    Adirondack Customs Thought

Are you referring to Quebec City or Ottawa government? I assume QC.

    Canadian Off Season Timekeeping

Yes, what a difference a longer schedule makes for OTP. I'm happy that VIA changed it because people now have a more reasonable expectation on arrivals and departures.

    Zephyr #1106

Thanks. Makes total sense. How does Amtrak handle tight connections?

    Zephyr #1106

Does anyone know what the eastbound Zephyr is numbered 1106? It's currently outside of SLC. All of its ETA's are listed as unknown, though its been running pretty mch on time.

I can see (name of train) from my window/porch/etc.

I grew up hearing the old Jersey Central from about a half mile away in Elizabeth,NJ. In San Francisco I lived on the J Church trolley line and also on the California St cable car line. Now in Jersey City I can see and hear both Amtrak NEC and NJT from bedroom window. Same is true for CSX freight.

They also serve the highway crossing there.

    Items stolen on Amtrak train

And I wouldn't be surprised if missing items, particularly suitcases , were mistakenly taken. I know I've mistakenly taken other's bags but was "caught" in time. It's easy to do if you're not mindful when detraining.

How and when does Amtrak decide to add cars to a route?

I was referring to Newark, NJ.

How and when does Amtrak decide to add cars to a route?

Unless I'm mistaken, the Meteor used to be longer than 14 cars (late'80's) and I seem to recall longer trains pulling into Newark heading to or leaving from NYP in the mid 1960's.

Amtrak Quietly Closing San Francisco Ticket Office eff Oct 28th

And, of course, BART. At least east-west.

Amtrak Quietly Closing San Francisco Ticket Office eff Oct 28th

True, but you had a roof over your head and you could check bags.

    Michigan trains late!

Amtrak didn't text or email you? That's pretty bad.

Amtrak should have an overnight LA-Bay Area train

San Francisco is one of the smallest (49 sq miles) and densest (885,000) cities in the U.S. It's nothing at all like LA.

People will steal your stuff on amtrak right in front of you.

More to the point, did Amtrak charge extra for the 16 foot machete? LOL

Amtrak Quietly Closing San Francisco Ticket Office eff Oct 28th

The Temporary Transbay was far better. You were sheltered, could purchase tickets and could check your bags. This sounds awful. And it's not Podunk, it's San Francisco. Way to go Amtrak.

AGR points for unused tickets or change fees under new rules?

Thanks for this post. My wife thinks I'm nuts when we board a transcon (CZ usually) and I search for conductor. The SCA usually informs the conductor of our presence but I want to make sure.

Nashville to Birmingham Bus to Crescent - Decent?

Not having done this I checked on map and its 2.7 miles from MARTA Civic CTR (Megabus stop) to Atlanta's Amtrak station. Birmingham's Greyhound station is basically at the train depot - .1 mile away. The Nashville-Birmingham bus is also cheaper and faster.
