Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

As I have said before, it seems like it is 1967-April 30, 1971 all over again.

Large increase in Empire Builder fares?

I recall that Amtrak served Douwe Egberts a few years ago but now I think they serve Folgers. On Acela, Amtrak serves Dunkin Donuts coffee. Corrections would be welcome.

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

That is true, except that all Amtrak would have to do is to provide the butter (which we know from recent trip reports may be too much to expect.) In the lucky event that the butter is provided, hopefully the customer can do the heavy lifting of applying the butter to the potato.

:)I think you are on to something (as long as they don't forget to load the butter.)

    Self-defense (on train)?

An item from the Flathead Beacon from 2019 to follow up on my recent post: https://flatheadbeacon.com/2019/12/16/montana-home-evacuated-bear-spray-explodes-oven/

    Self-defense (on train)?

I understand that some people have been subject to a significant amount of unpleasantness when their bear spray accidently discharged in their pocket. I believe discharging it on Amtrak would cause a rapid evacuation of the car. I believe it is against the Amtrak and airline policies to carry...

Hope your trip goes well and that you have time to give us a full report!

Amtrak 5 and 6 via Wyoming

When I was on the detour in 2014, the crew change was at Green River. Passengers were not allowed off the train so there was no fresh air break in Wyoming.

Amtrak 5 and 6 via Wyoming

It is good to keep in mind that these detours through Wyoming may have serious delays. The schedule through Wyoming may have little resemblance to the Zephyr's schedule through Colorado. When I was on a detoured No. 6 in May a few years ago, we were way late arriving in Salt Lake City, stayed...

    Lamy is hopping!

From their newsletter it looks like things are hopping at the beautiful Santa Fe station in Lamy - food, beer (which some regard as a necessary food) music, ground beef, vegetables, yoga, etc. These people have done a great job bringing some life to this settlement. Am I correct that Amtrak's...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

I never said that I liked flying or preferred air travel. I have many times gone way out of my way to travel by train when it would have been much easier to fly. But the current sleeping car rates and food offerings do not represent good value for me especially for a multi-day long distance...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

I have always enjoyed traveling by train but I am not about to spend $1000 plus on a long distance multiple-day Amtrak trip and receive pathetic food and service. I will gladly fly at a fraction of the cost and have more money to spend at my destination. And I don't really care whether the...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

Well I haven't given up on Amtrak by any means. I just have no place that I want or need to go while the virus is prevalent. I have "thoughts" of future travel but that is all they are at this point. No plans to travel in the foreseeable future. When the virus is no longer prevalent or is...

Amtrak 5 and 6 via Wyoming

We enjoyed our detour on 6 through Wyoming a few years back. We enjoyed the scenery and the antelope sightings. However there were no stops allowed for passengers just stops to change crews. Passengers were not allowed to detrain anyplace between Salt Lake City and Denver and there were no...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

I realize that we all have different tastes. I probably had at least 40 or 50 of each of these TV dinners over a period of several years. Since I was a repeat customer many times over, I obviously considered them quite satisfactory in terms of taste, price, time and convenience, nostalgia...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

I will take that Salisbury Steak Dinner over the May 2019 Lake Shore fare any time. I must have had that dinner once a week years ago and I suspect it had less salt than the present Amtrak meals.

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

I lived on a lot of TV dinners in grad school in the 1970s and they were far superior to what we were served on 48 for breakfast and lunch in May 2019.

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

Given my last trip on the Lake Shore, I would have jumped for joy if 48 had pulled up to a Dennys or an IHOP for breakfast en route. (This was May 2019 - I can't recall if it was contemporary dining or flexible dining at that time and does it make any difference?)

    Nominees for Amtrak BOD

Based on his recent trip reports on Trainorders, I would vote for Ross Rowland for the Board. He knows what needs to be changed.

    Cancelled Via Train

There now seems to be a discussion that the November start-up for the Ocean has been restored and there was a problem due to an adjustment in the computer system. Better stay tuned I guess.
