Suggestions needed for international rail trip

I have a good problem. I now have over 1,000,000 frequent flyer miles split 70 / 30 between two major U.S. Airlines. I'm thinking of doing 1 or 2 international rail journeys, 1 for high speed rail, the other for the most scenic routes. The sky's the limit. No destination is off limits. If...

    Empire Builder discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

I was on the northbound Coast Starlight (#14) with a connection in Portland to #28, the Empire Builder. We arrived in Portland about 1:20 late at 5:05 pm. #28 left as schedule at 4:45. There were around 10 of us who missed that connection. Why would they not hold #28 20 minutes, especially...

I confirmed the Amtrak CEO, president and several EVPs are on board. VIPs indeed!

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

On my current long distance Superliner train, the sleeping car attendant has roomette #1. They used to take the roomette closest to the end of the car, #9 or #10 or even stayed in the transition sleeper car. I think #1 is the best for less road noise and a smoother ride.

Preferential treatment for California Zephyr w/American View (10004)?

First let me preface this by saying it's been close to 10 years since I took a long distance train. I'm on #5, The California Zephyr right now. Since leaving Chicago, other than being put in the hole for other Amtrak trains, we haven't been delayed on sidings waiting for freight trains to...

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024 H1

The CZ (#5) that left Chicago yesterday has the specialized inspection car 10004 (American View} on its tail along with an additional transition sleeper. I'm on this train and have seen several Amtrak employees with lanyards and IDs. The conductor said they were members of a executive...

    Tipping on Amtrak

Next week I'm taking a long trip on the CZ, CS and EB. 8 days on the train, all in roomettes. I want to bring cash to tip the dining car staff, but can't find any menu prices on which to base the 15% - 20% tip? I'll tip the SCA $10/night. In case anyone is interested... Cleveland -...

    Involved In Train Accidents

I have been in two crossing incidents. The first on the CZ west of Reno when we hit a stationary pickup truck who wax sitting in his driveway. Yes, his driveway has a RR crossing. He Sid not realize his back end was still on the tracks. Minor injury to the driver, pickup truck destroyed. The...

    What's your favorite train station?

I vote for Washington Union Station based on your criteria. It has the architectural elements, frequent Amtrak service, a subway station to connect to the rest of the city, great food, and it's within walking distance of the Capital, mall, etc.... LAUS is second on my list.

    Zephyr or SW Chief?

Having taken all of Amtrak's long distance routes, I consider the CZ to be the most scenic. So the answer between the CZ and SWC is obviously the CZ!

    I'm baaaaaaaaaaaaaaack!!!!

Well, after being on this site almost everyday for 2 years, I took a 4 - 5 month hiatus. But I am back!!!! The 'train' bug bit me again (see my March 2011 trip). I don't have 999 hours to read all that has happened in the past 5 months... Can someone give me the Cliff Notes version of what...

    Adirondack Full Dome Seat Strategy

I also rode the Adirondack recently - on Friday 10/1 fro MTR to NYP. They did not open the dome car until after they collected all tickets at St. Catherines, so we could not see Montreal from the dome. They closed the dome at customs obviously. It reopenned just after customs. They shut it...

4 train articles in this weeks Cleveland Plain Dealer travel section

Well I guess the Plain Dealer missed that the luxury train is on hold before they published the article. No surprise there.

4 train articles in this weeks Cleveland Plain Dealer travel section

So I was looking at this weeks' Cleveland Plain Dealer newspaper and there are four train-articles. Two are by the Plain Dealer and two are from the Orange County Register. I had to link to other sources for those beacuse it is not on the Plain Dealer's website. (The two from the OCR are from...
