    Good article on sleeper travel

Thanks for posting this. It's nice to see a first-timer give a fairly decent review with the closest thing to a criticism being dated analog controls in the Roomette. Dated analog controls? YGTBSM!!!

    Amtrak Service Reductions

Tnx Brian. Those will be handy when I dream up fantasy trips - and maybe whenever I get to actually go on one of them!

Most scenic parts of Amtrak routes traversed during the night?

FWIW, Google Earth has a Sun tool in its View tab that gives the user control over the time, day and month anywhere along a route. In spite of all the griping about it being dark when on time for those scenic mountain views, I'm in favor of leaving the EB schedule much as it is. The flax in...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

All the timetables not blown out of the water by Covid-19 can be found here: Train Schedules & Timetables | Amtrak The pre-Covid ones not shown can be found in the archives or a much-cherished copy of the last paper System Timetables book.

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

This shows the most recent whole-route fares (with as many of the buckets as could be found) for all the LD trains: It was also just posted here: Long Distance Train Coach & Sleeper Fares (Buckets) The earliest such chart on file elsewhere is dated 26 Oct 2015.

Long Distance Train Coach & Sleeper Fares (Buckets)

This updated chart shows fares between the end points of each route, replacing the first four charts in this thread. Note that fares for the Silver Star and Silver Meteor are now the same (for their entire routes). They were equalized on 1 Jun 2020.

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

If you want to dazzle 'em with bodacious numbers, poke around on Arrow a few hours until you find a travel date over the whole route of the Silvers when the Saver Coach fare of $130 is offered and Bedrooms are at high bucket of $1591. You can then proudly proclaim $1461 for a one night trip...

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

Empirical data regarding this is available here: Long Distance Train Coach & Sleeper Fares (Buckets)

Food Delivery to Denver Union Station

IIRC, the train backs into the station and if on the track not closest to the station, Track 1, access to the station may only around the aft end of the train. If so, being as far back to the end of the train as possible will shorten the walk for food. However, there are 8 tracks there and as...

    Silver Service changes?

Thanks for taking the time to create and post that chart. It's refreshing to see some meaningful data..... .....rather that the customary blather seen on this board in lieu of it.

Will full service dining ever return to the Western trains?

And exactly what, pray tell, is that miniscule percentage?

Large increase in Empire Builder fares?

Why not? Or maybe that $1270 Roomette you reported seeing on 4/1/21 was caused by a cramp in the Amtrak whatyamacallit.

    Another Fare Bucket Chart

True. Using Amtraks Arrow, you get one day at a time. Using AmSnag you get/got as many as 30 days in one swell foop! I was lucky to have obtained most of those fares prior to AmSnags current problem.

    Another Fare Bucket Chart

Certainly! But it just takes longer. AmSnag gets it fares from Amtraks Arrow, so when AmSnag is belly up fares can still be had from Amtrak.

    Another Fare Bucket Chart

Here's an updated version of the usual bucket chart for the entire route: This also posted here for comparison purposes with previous versions: Amtrak FAQs & First-Time Rider Info

    California day trip destination?

Well, bms didn't seem to want to take the hint about calling an agent and Alice doesn't trust them, so I wonder what the the first paragraph of the following from Program Terms | Amtrak Guest Rewards really means?

Large increase in Empire Builder fares?

There's nothing at all unusual about fares going up and then back down. Many think once a fare goes up it stays up. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't.

Large increase in Empire Builder fares?

There's an old song that goes ♫What a difference a day makes,. . .♪ and so it is with Amtrak fares. Not only is the 4/1/21 Roomette fare from SEA to CHI back down to low bucket ($527 for one adult) it remains at that lowest possible price for 8 weeks until 5/27/21 when it goes up a bucket to...

    Questions about Empire Builder trip

If not familiar with the geography outside of Glacier, open up Google Earth and follow along the route the whole way. Been most of the whole route between Seattle and Columbus WI several times and IMHO there's only one pa rt of the route that's not "scenic" - the stretch between the East...
