A Flâneur in New York (and a bit of New Jersey) via Amtrak in COVID mode

Me neither! Anymore, most burgers and other sandwiches that are available at restaurants are so thick that they are nearly impossible to eat as a "sandwich". What's the point of making so large?

    Cruise ship discussion

I have experienced many cruises during my life and 4 of them have been on Carnival. My first Carnival cruise was a Spring break cruise on Freedom. When I told my friends about my booking, they thought I had lost my mind. It was a great cruise! While there were many college young people...

    Large plane discussion

I very much agree with you! That's my plan. But, as you said, it may be difficult to do. Sometimes, I have found, it is possible to determine the exact model of a plane that is scheduled for a flight. There could always be unplanned substitutions, however.

Not all ships have balcony cabins arranged in such a way that they taper towards the upper decks. I agree with you wife; I try to avoid booking such a situation as well. No question in any type of sea conditions that the most comfortable ride is on the lowest passenger deck possible and as...

    Best Chicago-Florida Route?

I like your suggestion. A Detroit section through Cincinnati would probably go through Dayton. If so, we might be able to finally get a return of rail service.

    The Boeing MAX 8 Accidents

Where's Harry Truman when we need him? Anymore, "The Buck Never Stops Anywhere." I place the blame on the leadership of the FAA and Boeing. There is "rot" at the FAA as well as at Boeing that needs to be excised. Is Congress responsible? In part, yes, because part of their job is Oversight...

Inconsistent Service: A bigger problem than the food?

I have wondered the same thing. I see this on Cruise Critic as well.

Most scenic parts of Amtrak routes traversed during the night?

Agree; it's quite a view! It's my impression that the view is becoming more restricted--at least leaving Union Station headed South--by new building construction. I wonder if anyone else thinks that as well.

Most scenic parts of Amtrak routes traversed during the night?

My trip on the Sunset Limited was Westbound and I agree with that area leaving New Orleans and going into Texas really was interesting country for me to see. It was "different" from other scenic trips I have experienced on Amtrak.

I appreciate seeing the photos you posted. Thank you. I can see why your wife loved it and, yes, it surely would be better than an Inside or just an Outside Cabin. If you booked a balcony cabin on a deck above where the Cove Balconies are located, I predict your wife would love it even more.

See Post #55 on this thread that I made. I said the same thing.

    Best Chicago-Florida Route?

I voted "other". Chicago-Indianapolis-Cincinnati-Louisville-Nashville-Chattanooga-Atlanta-etc. I'd love to include Dayton in the Indianapolis-Cincinnati segment, but it would not be reasonable to do so. A bit too much out of the way, plus Amtrak already uses the route between Indianapolis...

    Amtrak Service Reductions

I think that it sometimes takes awhile for a person in Mr. Flynn's position to learn who is giving him the "straight scoop" and who is providing a view more in line with that individual's agenda.

Thanks for answering my post. Your description of the Cove Balcony is what I have thought it might be. Needing to wipe down the balcony railing due to salt spray is something that I have not had to due, but, it's accurate that a residue of salt does form even on railings much higher in the...

    Large plane discussion

It is the regulatory bodies on both sides of the Atlantic that need to be convinced that went wrong initially has been properly corrected. I don't care if Boeing is convinced. It's not relevant. The recent news about construction flaws with the 787 says to me--as a Boeing shareholder--the...

Any possibility of Amtrak serving South Dakota?

2007-2011, I don't recall that either South Dakota or France being mentioned about population density that could support a simple rail network in Ohio, but that point was made.

Inconsistent Service: A bigger problem than the food?

I would add to that SCA expectation is assistance with luggage. I usually feel somewhat uneasy if I need to make a request to my SCA. I try to be an independent traveler and not being seen by a crew member as one who has service requests that are really not necessary. An excellent post! I...

Hey! The more the merrier! Interesting that you had praise for the Cove Balcony. I have wondered about that when Carnival first introduced it on some of their ships. What did you see when you sat on your deck chair on the Balcony? Did you see the ocean? Or, did you see sky and no ocean? I...

Has another poster said, there's no guarantee what King Neptune has planned for anyone sailing on his ocean. I have witnessed a cruise guest or two start to become "queasy" and the ship has yet to sail very far from the pier. My remedy to protect from seasickness is to keep one's stomach full...
