    Pacific Surfliner discussion

Set 4 and most of the 7 cab cars looked to be ready back in December.

    Pacific Surfliner discussion

over half of them we also paid the cost to rebuild as they were crash damaged. They can shortly, 4 or 5 venture sets in service should be enough. Getting the cab car and coach back would also help.

    Pacific Surfliner discussion

Surfliner got a federal grant to go back to 13RT a day. They’ve got slots for 16RT but the lack of rolling stock is a problem

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2024-2025)

No they are still going with that And given they are looking at the Stadler flirts in short 4 car sets not sure how they'd do anything other than a vending setup without destroying capacity or increasing costs with 2 staffed cafes given trains will need to run in pairs.

Winter Park (Colorado) Express is back

    Service is increasing.

Speculation about remaining life of Superliners

Single test because they only made one structural testing car, they could have crumpled a pre mass production car but they only had 1 of each type (Cafe, cab/coach and coach) Its a brightline standard so have to pass no margin to fail. same 16ft 2in of a superliner, this a structural test car...

Speculation about remaining life of Superliners

The C21 car was at 798k lbs vs the 800k lbs it needed to be. The car was 99.75% the way there From the 2016 NGEC

Speculation about remaining life of Superliners

At 1M each 20-33% the cost of a new car. It should have been done years ago when the superliner II hit 25 not as they are hitting 30 of a 40-45 year life.

Speculation about remaining life of Superliners

Money, doing that level of an overhaul is expensive. Amtrak spent 28k on 400 superliners and 50 viewliners or around 62k per car to do the interior refresh. A major mechanical upgrade is 500k-1M per car.

Colorado Mountain Rail Project development plan speeding forward

I wonder if stadler could turn around a 6 car intercity set in 3 years. I'd assume all 4 engines, 1 ADA bathroom, 1 smaller bathroom and a cafe setup. 250-350 seats matting on the exact setup and pitch. Not sure if they'd need 5 sets or 7-8 given we don't know running times and timetables.

    BART police

it would end up taking over 250 officers to provide the 20/7 coverage they need. thats assuming 4 shifts each working 3.5 11 hour days per week (3 on 4 off, 4 on 3 off) and shifts having 80-90% of officers available for patrol. That would at least double the labor cost of every train.

Colorado Mountain Rail Project development plan speeding forward

There aren't exactly a lot of cheap alstom bi level octogons around, galley cars or high levels I hope not. High levels especially would need a massive amount of work that doesn't seem worth it. Easily end up paying over half the cost of a new car. Can't say I'm surprised UP is angry at amtrak...

within 3 years means its got to be P42 or rebuild freight units pulling some existing single level stock be it horizons, comets ect.

    NRPC Documents

going to have to ask amtrak for them, they don't host them publicly online.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger Locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2H 2024 - 2025)

I know California asked Stadler about a Hydrogen loco and they refused to entertain the idea. Not sure how the Stadler Progress rail agreement works around the F125 or selling competing locos to it. Any built after 2015 have to meet T4

    Amtrak Siemens Charger Locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2H 2024 - 2025)

There were problems with PTC (not Siemens fault), the QSK95 engine and its directly related systems (most if not all of that was outsourced to Cummins) and dynamic brake grids in the first winter but much of that was sorted out in the last year.

    San Joaquins discussion

There are 14 of them so not enough to give every CC set 2 and some will still be used by San Joaquin trains until even more ventures or some other car type gets ordered.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger Locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2H 2024 - 2025)

ALC-42 have one and SC-44 are getting them likely after or as part of their 8 year major overhaul.

    San Joaquins discussion

They'll likely get used for axle count for now but given their layout they aren't really ideal for a coach car and surfliner isn't going to trade their cars which are coach on the 2nd floor and cafe below

December 2021 shot of a southbound early morning Pacific Surfliner between Camarillo and Oxnard. I've got a half dozen other photos form that morning I really like. The fog was perfect for lighting.
