Most scenic parts of Amtrak routes traversed during the night?

If we are including VIA Trains into the mix then I have a segment to nominate. On the Ocean from Mont Joli to Campbellton, especially the area near Matapedia. If you are lucky and a bit late going eastbound you will get the area near the Matapedia in daylight. Then on the Canadian westbound...

    AAPRCO 'The Scotian-Maple Leaf'

Actually from what I've heard from someone I trust completely VIA still accepts PVs. But one of the rules is the PV can't run behind a Park car. So you can't run on the Canadian, Skeena, or Ocean (maybe after November??) unless you have Canadian style HEP then you could run on the head end...

Going to the Beech: Beech Grove Shops that is

It is a lovely hotel. I would love to stay at it again when Covid isn't the largest issue. As I would love to use the pool facilities. Just to say I swam under the train shed.

    Crescent:Why Two locomotives?

People forget how many grades the Crescent route has. Basically from Birmingham all the way to Washington you are within 30-70 miles away from the mountain range. And North Georgia is very mountainous. The area in South Carolina is also fairly mountainous as it's not that far away.

Most scenic parts of Amtrak routes traversed during the night?

I also agree the best way to ride the Coast Starlight is northbound. You are guaranteed to get the coast in daylight, and the Cascades. You might miss the Puget Sound however but that will soon go away. Southbound can give you an amazing sunset if you make it to the coast in time. But that is...

Most scenic parts of Amtrak routes traversed during the night?

I think one of the best sections I've done in daylight that is normally after dark is Huntington, WV to Cincinnati, OH in the Ohio River Valley. I am lucky my life has allowed me to see many scenic stretches of track that are often hard to see. I rode a deadhead move of the real New River Train...

I didn't know there was a proving grounds track there. Now I will have to do some searching to try and find that. The local I photographed P45 it's largest customer is actually the Michelin Plant at Sand Spring. It looks like it receives maybe 100 cars per week.

It actually made its last run about four years ago now. Towards the end they only ran on Wednesdays and Thursdays. However the track is still in and maintained. Both engines are still on base. I've actually ridden the whole route of the Shaw AFB Railroad back when I was in high school. US 76...

Going to the Beech: Beech Grove Shops that is

This will make you really sad then but the Pickens abandoned their original line back a few years ago. It has now been turned into a trail for the entire length between Pickens and Easley. The last customer for the last few years was the Johnson Locomotive shop which I believe is owned by the...

Your welcome. I enjoy going on the adventures for sure. I'm thinking my next super big adventure will be to one of the few countries allowing us in before the end of the year. Conclusion Overall it was a very productive trip. I managed to get over 700 new miles in my rail atlas across Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Michigan, Indiana, and Kentucky. I managed to take some really cool photos in a handful of locations. So overall not a bad little trip. That being said we...
