    Really long bus rides

After reading this thread I found a YouTube Greyhound journey that I watched last night, if it is your sort of thing it's worth watching all the way through. He (Noel) seems to have had a run of bad luck with the buses he used and with some of their staff. Up to and including last year my...

    Really long bus rides

In early February 2002 rode all Greyhound for 6 days with just one night in a hotel. Zig zagged west-east starting in Boston to end up in Phoenix. Buses were busy as 911 was very fresh in peoples memories at that time, many who would usualy fly rode LD buses. I also remember there was often very...

It was sailing through a designated offshore mooring

    Should Amtrak be privatized?

It was tried in the UK and the result is 'Patchy' at best. Often inferior to pre privatisation and fare costs are so high. To be honest there are maybe one or two reasonably run companies, but fares that put people off using rail unless you can find a special deal.

    Thruway Connecting Services (TCS)

I too was at a bit of a loss sometimes and discovered even small cities or towns had either a tourist office or a townhall with contact details. Frequently they had all the info you need. One of my favourite photos ever. The entire journey was amazing, starting and ending in NYC. I felt I had...

New York to San Francisco, or the other way around?

Hello Karl, you've come to the right place for help and opinions on travelling Amtrak, nothing like the AU forum anywhere. Only one suggestion for you as there is plenty of advice here to cover all your trip, and all worth considering. If you like some fun and something not seen anywhere else...

    Thruway Connecting Services (TCS)

Just a thought for you. If you find gaps in the Amtrak/Greyhound/Flix routes, consider researching local bus services, in particular in the more remote areas. Last September/October I managed LAX to SAC via SLO - SFO - coastal N Cal - coastal Oregon to Florence then across to Bend where I...

A southbound train, some ferries, a new (to me) train, and back

That's a proper short break, you paced yourself well. That you included the vital bus connecting services too made your trip so vivid. Love your writing style, it is so inclusive, thank you.

Shanghai - Hong Kong HS Sleeper

What balance! Excellent anecdote, China sounds exciting.

    China - rail travel

Have now booked flights to/from China for September - October this year. From Europe to Shanghai, return to Europe from Hong Kong. For practical purposes the next stage before booking rail journeys is mobile data sim for the much used Mifi. I am not a heavy data user, maybe max 5-10 GB per...

    Jackson, MS

Is he family? As you say very much to do, busy and bustling city with many many options for the visitor. Very different to the much quieter Jackson MS. One of the Civil Rights museums grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go, world class about their subject.

Give or take it still felt the same as your experience at the end of September this year, to the point that the Iron Horse Grill close to the Amtrak station sounds very much like the bar you were in. Busy, good atmosphere, great live music and good food. One or two homeless people around now...

    Jackson, MS

I rented my car from Enterprise, Jackson Downtown, South State Street, it was booked online. The day before the rental started I phoned to arrange collection at an agreed time from my hotel close to the Amtrak station, and that's what happened. The staff were very helpful, polite and pleasant...

Fort Worth to Los Angeles bad service

I think you are being a little unfair on como, I also found a decline in Amtrak and generally in service across the board too. Also people as a whole were being a little less kind to each other than they were a short while back This problem is not just a US problem. it is repeated in most...
