    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

“In politics every crisis is an opportunity.” I put quotes because I am sure it is one although I don’t recall who. Although I am not one who believes something like “an entire party and all of business is out to kill the Amtrak network if it is the last thing they do,” I do believe there is a...

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

The reason we don’t want LD train suspensions is that if they are suspended there is an odds on chance they will never run again.

Could Transmashholding expand to North America?

Yes I would buy a Russian car, and durability primarily. Different nations tend to have different standards for what something has to hold up to; Russian made stuff is generally designed to be capable of handling several times the required operating specification, on the premise that all...

Could Transmashholding expand to North America?

Russian made products are, generally speaking, well made, high quality, and very inexpensive for what they are. Since I discovered this in the late 90s importing Poljot (Pawl-yoat) I have been involved in a number of ventures importing watches (Poljot, Vostok, Slava, and Raketa) as well as...

Was this ever used by Amtrak?

Now now, Jishnu, never let the facts get in the way of a good narrative.

NY Times: Anderson out, William Flynn in

The desired competence of someone at implementing an agenda varies on how much you like their agenda.

What are the best and worst commuter rails in the U.S.?

See? Some of these commuter lines still allow people to enjoy life on their trains. ^_^

What are the best and worst commuter rails in the U.S.?

NJT not being the worst would scare me. Traveling from NYC to places within NJ works poorly. Traveling from one place in NJ to another that is not on the same line is, hmm how do I describe this without making it seem like they intentionally make it as bad as possible? I can’t. Because given...

SEPTA pulls PCC trolleys out of service for at least a year

Frankly the vast surface portion of Phillys trolleys don’t make sense. They take advantage of almost none of the benefits of rail, while being saddled, and saddling the city with, its disadvantages.

Amtrak Asks Two People Who Use Wheelchairs To Pay $25,000 For A Ride (NPR 1/17/20)

The incompetence of this is not in their inability to calculate costs, it is in hell expensively they do things. Amfleet II on the cardinal, average revenue $100 per seat per trip, 59 seats, $5900 for the trip. The car is out of service for two roundtrips, one to remove the seats the other to...

Amtrak CEO Anderson to NJT: Be PTC Compliant or NO Penn Station.

From what I have heard Murphy has actually been deepening the politicising of NJT. I haven’t really heard anything good at all about NJT as of late. I have reached the point where I don’t trust it at all though.

    Amtrak, a Marx Brothers revival

GAAP actually allows a lot of leeway in where losses are shown. GAAP is generally designed to allow investors and stakeholders that are not directly involved in running the company to ascertain its overall financial health. No company I know of uses GAAP for internal reports or deciding long...

Equipment Order in the works this year (2018)?

The concept of risk is an interesting thing, because it depends on what you consider a risk. Obviously theres a certain risk with an aircraft that if it mechanically fails you can drop out of the sky. However when you were talking about and under budgeted and already somewhat unreliable...

Richard Anderson replacing Wick Moorman as Amtrak CEO

One of the things that bugs me about NJ Transit is their lack of competent political hacks. The proper job of the head of a government agency is to advocate for their agency, against any opposers. NJ Transit usually fails to publicly do this. Andersons job is to advocate for improving and...

If you could add any amenities to Amtrak, what would they be?

16 cars is the current understood limit for Amtraks current HEP standard and requirements. Before one starts expanding platforms, EMUs and Bi-level cars are options to consider.

Pacific Parlour Car Permanently Retired February 2018

They were built 65+ years ago and have had the tar beaten out of them in Amtraks service, and I believe equally so in El Capitan service (6 sets, six cars, daily service). So yeah, the age is quite true.
