    Overpowered short consists

I remember the Desert Wind back in the mid 1980s generally had about a 4 or 5 car consist ( coach/bag, coach, former Hi Level diner fitted out as a diner/lounge, sleeper) with 1 F40. It was often routed up Cajon's South Track which is a 3% grade. They'd usually cut HEP climbing the South Track...

    Scanning the Rails

There has been speculation that railroads would go digital for a long, long time. Like 10 years. I am only going to worry about it when I start seeing something concrete. In the meantime, I will enjoy my scanner.

Please Mr. Anderson (sleeping suites in coach?)

An old thread on buying 2 seats uncovered this from the then current Service Manual ("Blue Book") Basically, you can't buy two seats just to sit alone. If you do, the conductor doesn't really have to honor...

Please Mr. Anderson (sleeping suites in coach?)

    Superliner sleepers have a sleeping capacity of 40 (13 revenue roomettes x 2, 5 bedrooms x 2, 1 handicapped room x 2, 1 family bedroom x 2 counting only the adult berths). Viewliners have a capacity of 30 (12 roomettes x 2, 2 bedrooms x 2, 1 handicapped room x 2). The common 10-6 of the...

Please Mr. Anderson (sleeping suites in coach?)

It appears to take up about the same space as a roomette with half the capacity. Since ultimately pricing is a reflection of capacity, in what way do you think something like this could be priced more cheaply?

NY Times: Anderson out, William Flynn in

Amtrak management is not entirely stupid and knows they are under MANDATE to operate the national network Zeroing it out on their own budget request would be a stupid meat axe approach that Congress would override and they know it. It doesn't mean they want to, as both Anderson's attempted...

Empire Builder Coach Seats in East Glacier Park

Usually big pretty big turnover at East Glacier. All train staff will have a manifest showing groups, assuming you are on the same reservation and if the attendant is on the ball, they'll have some kind of contiguous space.

From an Amtrak management perspective under Anderson it is. From a Congressional perspective, the source and assigner of those funds, it isn't, or shouldn't be.

It would survive, but hopefully with much less federal support, such as competitive DOT grants available to any state, and owned and operated by a consortium of states that benefit. Amtrak restricted to the NE Corridor would lose political support in Congress necessary for its survival. I...

    Sunset Limited wreck 03/03/20?

Just my personal opinion, but I don't consider a grade crossing strike a "train wreck" unless it results in a derailment. A train wreck to me is a derailment, a train to train collision, or something similar.

Have to say I agree with the comment that maybe a candidate from the hospitality industry may make a lot of sense.

    King Street Station (Seattle)

Still doubt they'd use Union. If they decide to move away from King Street the game becomes entirely open, no need to limit the alternatives to a rail station not used as such since 1971 with no rail infrastructure. They could put it anywhere that makes sense from an engineering and access...

Can't help but think having Congress get in his face was an unpleasant surprise and may have something to do with his agreement to get out of Dodge. He came in great guns with his inane proposal to literally get Amtrak out of Dodge City with his SWC bus bridge. No doubt he had agreement with...

    King Street Station (Seattle)

Precisely what is the source of your information on your authoritatively sounding possible HSR routes and Sounder routes? Also, since King and Union are literally yards apart, a new underground HSR would actually make more sense to continue use of King Street Station as a head house...

    King Street Station (Seattle)

Well, when HSR starts bearing any resemblance to reality maybe, since it may involve an entirely new line. Right now it is a lot of excited hot air. Given how major infrastructure projects move in the Northwest, with the level of NIMBYism here, an actual operating HSR is 20 years in the...
