200MPH+ on the NEC: Is it practical?

ALX and CVS are also often very long stops when they open 2 doors for dozens of pax with luggage. Very frustrating waste of time.

    Family Bedroom discussion

I recently completed FLG-LAX with my wife and 8 year old in the family bedroom. Personally, I enjoyed the family bedroom. I found it quiet and slept well. My wife and I are of average height, and average to below average width. We shared the bottom bunk. I only woke up once overnight and that...

    Superliner Sleeper Restrooms

I normally only ride on the NEC but did ABQ-FLG (coach) and FLG-LAX (sleeper) within the last month. All of the restrooms in my car were out of service on each trip. For ABQ-FLG, they tried to fix the bathrooms at ABQ but had no success. I felt bad for the mobility impaired people in my car...

    Amtrak to Grand Canyon

I’ve spent the past month in Flagstaff and one week before that in ABQ. I’ve enjoyed Flagstaff and would suggest that for Grand Canyon as others have. I personally enjoyed the train ride from ABQ to FLG.. nice scenery at sunset The area around ABQ station is a bit odd. On the other hand, FLG...

    Amtrak to the Beach

I took the same ride with my family from WOB - arrived to Old Orchard Beach at 2PM and left at 7PM. The cafe car attendant told me 100 people boarded to head south, which sounded about right. I also had never been there before but it was absolutely jammed. There was really nowhere left to sit...

Detraining one stop early, then reboarding

It often used to be cheaper (as long as the right buckets were available, you could often get the stopover at no additional cost) however that has gone away and I am not aware of any advantage of booking multi-city at this point.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Ugh - I just spent the past few hours at DCA trying to fly up to BOS for a meeting tomorrow. Due to thunderstorms, I had three flights cancel and ended up back at home, missing tomorrow’s meeting. Would’ve been an absolutely perfect application for an overnight sleeper car (even if my planned...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

I had a booking for 67 on June 27th and just received a notification the train is canceled that day and will not run. Too bad as it would have worked perfectly for me.

    Checked baggage on Pacific Surfliner

Is checked baggage still suspended on the Surfliner? The “advisories” page linked above doesn’t mention it any longer but I can’t find any conclusive information online. I would love to be able to check in some luggage for a trip later this week but not sure if it’s an option yet. Thanks.

Do current Acela trainsets have USB ports in Business Class?

No, but they have regular A/C outlets.

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

I believe the Crescent was also canceled. I had a reservation on the Cardinal from Charlottesville to Alexandria on Sunday, and it was canceled along with the Crescent.

CVS Layover - Where to Dine and What to See?

Sounds like a great afternoon/evening! Public Fish has a relatively small inside, and a large patio with heaters, which would probably be pleasant in April. They do take reservations on OpenTable which I would recommend. I will leave you with two other options right on that strip: Doma...

CVS Layover - Where to Dine and What to See?

Yes, a lot of restaurants in Charlottesville are closed Sunday. Last time I was in town on a Sunday I went to Public Fish and Oyster, it is a bit on the pricier side but the food was very good. It's nearly just across the street from the train station.

CVS Layover - Where to Dine and What to See?

I’ve taken many trips to Charlottesville via train, usually staying at the Quirk which is a very short walk from the station. One of my favorite restaurants is Hamilton’s (Hamiltons) which is on the downtown mall. You could walk there in 10-15 minutes and spend some time browsing the many shops...

L' Enfant Plaza - flag stop?

Although it's on the schedule, I found this page that says "Please note, while VRE is running full service, the Amtrak Step-Up program will remain suspended until further notice." I'm not sure if that means the Amtrak trains are no longer stopping at L'Enfant at all, or...? If anyone happens to...

L' Enfant Plaza - flag stop?

Just looking to confirm there hasn't been any change to the L'Enfant Plaza stop with COVID. My wife is looking to catch 125 at L'Enfant on Friday as she will be tight on time, and her work is on green line.. 125 is still included on the VRE timetable so I assume it's still stopping there, but...

    Crescent Configuration

Just rode Greensboro to Charlottesville this morning. The train showed 90% full and was this same consist. I was surprised there were only two coaches; anyway, the conductor was great about assigning seats and we were able to get seats together for my family. The new departure time worked great...

    Riding the Maple Leaf train

Is the Maple Leaf still 2-1 in business? Looking to ride POU-BFX next month, Business is around a $30 upcharge which I think would be worth it if it is indeed the 2-1 cars considering it's a pretty long ride.

ALX vs WAS coming from DCA airport

If it were me, I would do WAS for a northbound train, ALX only for a southbound train: Many more food options at WAS (none right at ALX) / overall nicer place to wait More northbound train options Level boarding possible (if not a train originating in the south; much easier to roll on with your...
