Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

God I can't put into words how much I identify with the sentiment in this comment. Sleeping car passengers are generally not involuntary riders (i.e. the old Grandmaw taking the Builder to visit her doctor), and they are also people who have money to afford travel upgrades to the tune of up to...

Amtrak's New "Fresh Choices" Dining on CL & LSL

"The anticipated cost savings are an annualized $3 million reduction in operating costs on these two routes. Some of which, will be reinvested in the product." Haven't we all heard some Mumbo-jumbo like this before?

Advice please, 30th St. or Washington DC

He is talking about rail terminals in the "bygone" era when homeless folks had relatively free roam in such large station halls. Some describe GCT as having been the most notable example of the phenomenon. Of course it ended long ago and by the time 9/11 happened it was unheard of. September...

Proposals for Restored Gulf Coast Service

WXXV is low rent to the extent that it is almost reminiscent of SCTV or one of those other satirical news stations. I'm at least glad that the reporting is slanted very much in favor of getting the public opinion further behind the restoration effort. As an aside, I got quite a chuckle from that...

What was it like to travel in a Heritage Sleeper?

I agree that the slumbercoaches were a great idea for their time, but there couldn't possibly be a modern iteration of that idea considering how many of today's travelers are obese.

Auto Train Derailment - Auto Racks (3/29)

"Free" rental cars for everyone on arrival in Sanford?? This is utterly perplexing. How on earth do passengers get comp'd for failure to deliver their vehicles on arrival at end points on the Auto Train?

Proposals for Restored Gulf Coast Service

I think any funding is better than no funding, but I'm going to be the skeptical one and start writing some letters demanding an explanation as to how $35 million in funding is supposed to get this project anywhere. The Southern Rail Commission has a small budget which it is responsible for...

    Amtrak 58, 59 originating/terminating in Jackson, MS.

This could be a matter of what coverage Amtrak gets in their insurance vs. their level of risk whilst the Bonnet Carré Flood Prevention Spillway is open. Although Amtrak traffic is truncated at Jackson for now, CN is running their usual lineup of merchandise & unit trains all the way south to...

Amenities that have disappeared from Amtrak

The thing I will miss the most is the "bedtime sweet". One thing I used to brag to my friends (many of whom would upgrade themselves to Delta Air Lines' first class whilst away on business travel) about was having a nice piece of chocolate waiting for you atop the pillow after the bed was...

What was it like to travel in a Heritage Sleeper?

From what I gather you're certainly giving a good account of the way it was. You clearly lived through the best years of American travel. Although I feel the main reason for why travel, and particularly train travel, can never go back to "the way it was" is due to the change in our culture...

    Any News on Miami Airport?

Frankly it makes more sense to drop passengers off right next to Sunnyside Yard if what you're aiming for is operating convenience.

Atlanta to Fort Worth new Amtrak Service study

I only wish this were the strategy that America were forced to resort to with regard to redundant freeways and under-utilized airports.

    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

It is sad to say but politically speaking it appears this administration has no use for transportation policy. Trump's victory in this regard was making some popular comments about "crumbling infrastructure", as well as getting to appoint a minority (Mrs. Chao) to his cabinet in an effort to...

    On tonight's Hoosier State...

I know Jack personally and I can attest to his brilliant work ethic and wealth of experience. I think he will have no shortage of choices for his future employment- but regrettably the flaws with how IPH's passenger traffic department was managed may have given him a bad taste for railroad...

    Freight verse Passenger engines

I can't be the only one wondering why Amtrak's future approach toward power mentions nothing about Multiple Unit power. The Stadler DMU product which is being built for Tex Rail between downtown Fort Worth and the DFW airport for example is certified to run with mixed traffic and meets all...

Hoosier State Going from IPH Back to Amtrak

This should speak a grim tone towards the future of private contract-operated passenger rail. Well folks you know what to do, ring those congressional telephones and tell them to get serious about predictable public funding for passenger rail.

Hoosier State Going from IPH Back to Amtrak

It's been a wash for quite some time. Amtrak got the bulk of the InDoT subsidy from the start of the agreement. I'm with ThirdRail on this one however- the rumors on Trainorders will rot your brain so it's best not to make any suppositions on what is to happen until official announcements are made.

    CONO getting chef back?

I know the fellow you're talking about: a fine company asset indeed. I have also tried exploring how common such a commute is and I have concluded that out of state commutes among LD OBS crews are nearly somewhat common. Although Charlotte to New York is the most extraordinary case I have ever...

What small changes would increase ridership exponentially?

I have sometimes wondered why Amtrak could never conceive a class of seating which you would consider as being underneath Amtrak's usual definition of coach class. If Amtrak could take a chair car from the Silver Meteor, for example, and reconfigure the seating in that car to have more of a...

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-1Q 2024)

While I agree that the existing regulations on passenger car manufacturing in the US today are over-reaching and in some ways are a hindrance to new passenger cars being put into service, we are absolutely going to have to get cozy with them because President Protectionist is not within a...
