    Trump and Amtrak/Budget cutting funding

Who knows if this will really come to pass but it does seem a lot more likely now.I can only be grateful that I was able to complete my long-desired transcontinental trip last year.

The Texas Eagle - Los Angeles to Chicago, May 2015

Just caught up with this - loved the video! The southern transcontinental route is so different from the northern route that I took.

    Our transcontinental adventure

Before I get on with the rest of the journey - a brief bit about my first morning of the journey. Taking a shower on the Capitol Limited in our private bathroom was a novel experience for sure. I think this is the first time, I have taken a shower on a moving vehicle (unless of course you count...

    DAL-NOLA-NYC-DAL

Nice trip report! I have lived in the New York are for 25 years and actually work in Manhattan but you did more as a visitor in a few days than I did all year :-)

    Our transcontinental adventure

The second leg of the journey was what i was really looking forward to being the first ever trip by sleeper on Amtrak. My last overnight journey on Amtrak was on the Auto Train back in 1991 - in coach no less. This was in a heritage coach car - long before Superliners were introduced on that...

    Our transcontinental adventure

Apologies - I have been too busy at work. Hope to complete the trip report later today :-)

can anyone show me how showering over the toilet is done?

Even though the water is hot, it does not come at a high rate. My guess is that its probably no more than a gallon or two per minute. Considering that most people (like me) take pretty quick shoes (say 5 minutes max), there is probably no worry about running out of water. I did see them...

can anyone show me how showering over the toilet is done?

On our recent transcontinental trip, I took several showers in our bedroom's attached bathroom and had no problem whatsoever. This was both on Superliners on the Capitol Limited and Empire Builder. The only technique is that you need to use the bedroom as the changing room as there is no place...

Which is better Capitol Limited or Cardinal??

Its no contest - take the Capitol Limited. The on time performance of the Capitol Limited seems to be a lot better and has a full dining car. We just traveled recently on the Capitol Limited and had an excellent experience.

    Our transcontinental adventure

We left pretty early on the morning of August 12 from my home in northern New Jersey in a taxi. Even though our train was only supposed to leave at 9:35am, we left home at about 6:45am. Traffic over the George Washington Bridge can be very unpredictable. Also, my mother had a hip replacement...

    Our transcontinental adventure

Our itinerary: New York Penn station to Washington DC on Northeast regional train 141 business class Washington DC to Chicago on the Capitol Limited in bedrooms Chicago to Seattle on the Empire Builder in bedrooms My parents are getting older (82 and 78 respectively) and I have long wanted to...

Amtrak – Not the worst on-time performance (OTP)

By a miracle on my recent transcontinental trip from New York to Seattle, all three of our trains arrived right on the dot so those didn't help in this particular contest :-)

    Condition of Superliners

Here is an interior photo of our bedroom on the Superliner that we took on the Capitol Limited. I noticed that it has LED lighting and tasteful wood textured paneling. I assumed that this was a newer car than what we had on the Empire Builder but based on AlanB's comments, it appears that this...

    Condition of Superliners

Why we travelled by sleeper bedrooms: This trip was my present for my parents. Dad is 82 and Mom is 78. Both are mobile but have a hard time walking long distances. Initially I booked us on roomettes for your journey but looking at videos on YouTube, I realized it would just not work for...

    Condition of Superliners

Good point - I did, in fact, send a note for her on that page and also for several other Amtrak employees who went over and above their duties to make the journey memorable and comfortable for us. Pretty much every Amtrak employee we encountered on our journey was helpful and polite.

    Condition of Superliners

I just completed an epic transcontinental journey and will post a proper trip report soon. However I did want to make a comment about the state of the cars. We took the Capitol Limited from Washington to Chicago and then the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle. We had bedrooms for both legs...

How have you found the patronage on Amtrak LD trains lately?

The Capitol limited that we took yesterday was completely full in both coach and sleeper.

    The stars have aligned :-)

With my upcoming trip, I often keep an eye on the location of the trains I will be taking. I saw this great alignment of the western trains. Given how late some of them have been running lately, it was oddly satisfying to see this...

    Consist update for 21/22

I have wondered about this too - I guess there are no sever grades on this route?

San Diego to Toledo/Toledo to San Diego June-July 2016

Really enjoyed reading this. The information about special assistance for boarding in Chicago was very useful as I will be traveling next month with my parents and my mother finds if especially hard to walk long distances.
