Taking the 3:40 Lake Shore Limited from NYC to Chicago. First time in coach after taking trips in a roomette. What can I expect in Coach? What should I bring to stay warm and sleep through the night? Is it noisy? What about the bathrooms? Can I spend most of the trip in the observation car?

I am on a Cardinal Viewliner train in July and I was assigned Roomette #5. I wanted to know if room #2 was available so I called Amtrak. The rep told me it is available -- for $142.00 more. So are certain rooms are priced more than others for a reason? Aren't they all the same? Should I make...

Has anyone scored a bedroom on a poor-fair bid? I just bid on an Amtrak viewliner bedroom and my bid was in the fair range. I would bid more but I can't afford an excellent bid. I figure if they don't sell the bedroom the normal way and no one wants one, some money is better than none.

The other Superliner trains going to WAS were more expensive or all roomettes were booked. I always preferred the Viewliner because of the upper bunk and its window where you feel you are above the stations that go buy like on a Superliner.

I did and there were none. They were all booked on all of the cars.

I'm going to Washington on a Superliner Amtrak and was assigned room 14 roomette. But I immediately called Amtrak and switched to a Viewliner and got room 8. I paid a tad more but Youtube videos from past riders say the lower level of the Superliner sucks. You can hear residents conversations...

I have a trip on Nov 30 on the Cardinal leaving Chicago to NYC. I'm in a roomette and bid up to a bedroom. How close to my trip will I hear if my bid was accepted or not? A few days before? Day of?

How are the blankets? Should I bring my own thicker blanket?

When Amtrak says 3 coach seats left at this price or whatever number sleeper rooms at this price, are they really set aside at certain prices, or is this Amtrak's way to spur sales of the seats and rooms until they become more expensive?
