Farewell to the Queen of the Skies

I flew a 747 twice in my youth; JFK-rome, STL-HNL, both in coach before the airlines crammed seats into the economy section. For our COVID-delayed anniversary trip to Italy, my wife and I booked the connection in FRA just to sit on the upper deck. Item off the bucket list. Came back on a 787 in...

    Amtrak axle count discussion

Been on 2 car Chestnut Hill locals that got up to 75 on the mainline between North Philadelphia and 30th street many times. I don't think SEPTA cuts its trains now, since the PRR and Reading were connected. They just close the extra cars to passengers.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

Much easier to cancel and get a full refund to original payment on Amtrak than UA or AA. I had no trips booked on DL, so no experience there.

    current cancellation policy

Amtrak seems to be granting COVID-19 refunds to original form of payment with no hassle. As the previous poster said, state COVID-19 as your reason when you get to a human being. It should be quick from there. The website and automated phone service ("Julie") don't give the waiver.

    St. Louis-San Diego Summer Trip

Check bedrooms as well; occasionally they go lower than roomettes, but the lowest roomette I've seen STL-CHI-LAX (Business class STL-CHI) was $690 for a solo traveler. If the River Runner route floods, you're looking at a bustitution anyway. Only time I've been grossly late is during heat waves...

Missouri River Runner Schedule Change, Spring 2020

No update to the schedule on the web site. Same one since 2017. I want to know if the eastbound afternoon train is still the same time. Would make barbecue runs feasible again.

I can see (name of train) from my window/porch/etc.

Help in CUS shouldn't be a problem. Redcaps and carts routinely meet the Lincoln service trains.

I can see (name of train) from my window/porch/etc.

I used to live within hearing distance and a 15 minute walk of the UP westbound main out of STL to KC (Missouri River Runner) Could always tell the UP freights from the River Runner. And on occasion, UP steam.

I can see (name of train) from my window/porch/etc.

I go past that building a lot. [emoji846] Usually on the first Lincoln service of the day northbound unless I'm connecting to the Capitol or SWC, then it's the second. Usually the Eagle southbound.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

My conference got canceled due to COVID-19. Roomette to DC and back. Called just now to cancel, first got the standard cancellation fee line. Stated the conference was canceled due to COVID-19, so the reason for the trip was no longer there, and that I hated to lose that value. Rep quickly...

Why trains instead of planes for long distance?

You're dating yourself. And me. They used the Sparta, IL station for the movie. Can't remember if it was IC or GM & O.

So it's whatever works that particular day. [emoji846]

Way to cut down losses on long distance trains

Warning: Slightly off-topic. Too late. Besides, with "profit" being the watchword, only CEOs with "proven track records " are considered. Anderson turned around Delta, so of course he was qualified to run the national rail network--it's just like an airline. Long distance train travel today...

Capitol Limited and Washington Union Station

When did this shift occur? I distinctly remember having to go down the stairs last July for the WB Capitol. Guess I'll find out in a month.

Not in this case. But the waived change fee might save me. Hoping the travel ban is temporary.

    COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Pandemic: Amtrak-related Discussion

My employer has cancelled all non-essential business travel. There goes my March STL-WAS trip down the drain. And 20% of my ticket.

    Amtrak.com multi-city search problem

BC is worth it on STL-CHI/KCY. It's almost always a quieter ride, and the seats are better than the Horizon ex-commuter coaches. Chicago trips for me usually start with the early morning departures, and I can sleep until Joliet, single side if by myself, double with my wife. Lincoln service 300...

Still around, and ready to ride the rails again!

Famed Amtrak consistency. I've always been told my BC ticket doesn't qualify me for the lounge (room) in STL.

Still around, and ready to ride the rails again!

There is no BC lounge in STL, only a room for sleeping car passengers on the SB Eagle. My family did the SW Chief from STL a couple of years ago, only we paid the extra to take 302 to Chicago and catch the Chief from there. Dinner in the diner on night 1 instead of Amcafe, and no worries about...

More restrictive ticketing non refundable no changes coming March 1, 2020

Airlines do put restrictions on first class tickets. They offer a choice: "flexible" fares have no restrictions, and are generally the most expensive fares. However, there are non-refundable first class tickets, subject to change fees. Unless your business requires it, or there are no "lower...
