    Northeast Regional discussion

Amtrak was able to squeeze some extra runs into the timetable, but I’m curious how they did it. Without using HHP8s, met cab cars, or running a motor on each end, you still need to accomplish some switching at NYP or WAS. At NYP and WAS lower level, running the engine around the consist would...

    Acela discussion

So what’s up with the 1/18 cancellations? Definitely not weather related, it’s not even that cold out. Has to be something else.

    Southwest Chief discussion

Anyone notice the Chief has really been struggling on the Transcon, specifically between Needles and Albuquerque? Seems like it’s always losing 1-3 hours.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Really feels like Amtrak can’t get anything right with dining.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

It’s nice to see coach passengers in the diner again, but I hope the current situation is just a rollout introduction. Why can’t pricing be based on the menu item? I recall spending $10ish on the continental breakfast that more than filled me up. Now we’re laying down $20 regardless if I get...

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E) (2015 - 1Q 2024)

28 had the Lounge, Coach, Sleeper; Dorm. There are bedrooms in the Sleeper.

apparently PTC didn’t load, and a P42 ended up leading

    Mask requirements on Amtrak

I would think # of people refusing to ride if there was no mandate > # of people refusing to ride while there is a mandate. Just my guess. If Amtrak were to remove the mandate tomorrow, I'd guess a lot of people would cancel.

Adding a guaranteed connection to a reservation?

Update on this: The sales rep gave me a different reservation for the connection to #30 in Chicago, but added a note to my #8 reservation that indicated a protected connection to #30 in Chicago. She said it will hold up if the connection is missed.

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

There is still a lot of “if we” or “may” verbiage in these statements, so it may end up that nothing gets cut. Still, it’s not a great look for Amtrak considering the bill that just passed. Here’s a bunch of taypayer money, and the first thing that happens are service cuts.

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

Im booked on the Empire Builder out of Seattle on 1/12 (Wednesday), which is one of the “off” days when it ran on tri-weekly schedules. What do you all think: am I safe or at risk of a cancellation?

    Question about cross-country train trip

Do the Cardinal! It's a cool little train that has a little bit of everything! A high speed sprint down the Northeast Corridor, rough rails on a short line, mountain railroading through a river gorge, and cutting through the farmlands in the Midwest. It's a great ride.

    Changing rooms?

Quick question: I have a roomette booked on a Superliner, and I'd like to change the roomette I'm booked in; I'd like to try the bottom level for something different. I called to change the room, but the sales rep said there would be an increase in price, since the sales are going for a higher...

    West Coast Routes

The Sunset is notorious for it’s schedule padding, and failure to still keep time. Awhile ago, UP and Amtrak struck a deal to rewrite the Sunset’s schedules, adding literal hours of padding in exchange for better time keeping. The result? UP just gobbled up the padding lol. The layover in San...

    West Coast Routes

Yes, but the ATSFs Automatic Train Stop system had an equal part in allowing the 90mph running. Remember, without an automatic train stop or cab signaling system, you can’t go faster than 79. That was the reason the Chief was allowed to go 90 (along with the class 5 track). Now, PTC covers the...

    West Coast Routes

Also worth mentioning that class 5 track doesn’t necessarily mean 90mph running. Per the FRA, you need an automatic train stop or automatic cab signaling system to exceed 79. PTC does fulfill this requirement, but it’s still up to the host railroad to increase the passenger limit. They may...

Adding a guaranteed connection to a reservation?

Great, thanks! And that’s fine, I probably would go coach on #30 anyways.

Adding a guaranteed connection to a reservation?

Is it possible to add a connection to an existing reservation? Or, does that require canceling the existing trip and rebooking entirely? Example: I have a current reservation from SEA to CHI on #8. I want to add a connection on #30 from CHI to WAS. The connection from #8 to #30 is a guaranteed...

Amtrak potential service reduction due to staff shortage

Percentages without numbers are useless. Losing 6% of the workforce can be fatal if the system is already strained to the max using its existing workforce. There comes a point when losing one person has to result in some cut to service. You can’t force someone beyond hours of service
