Berlin reporter rides the Capitol Limited (original in German)

"Mr. Important with radio." That made me guffaw. Interesting story, though.

Adirondack June '23 cancellation, and September restoration, state of Upstate NY service

More fool me. Yes, the Maple Leaf. Thanks for the correction.

Adirondack June '23 cancellation, and September restoration, state of Upstate NY service

Has the Adirondack returned to its Toronto run? I checked this morning on the Amtrak website and was able to "book" a ticket July 20 from Toronto to Albany. Or is the Amtrak site hinky?

Adirondack June '23 cancellation, and September restoration, state of Upstate NY service

My wife, service dog and I are ticketed Toronto-Albany and Albany-Chicago in late October. Presumably the "sun kinks" will be gone by then.

    Amtrak Coach discussion

Absolutely true. The last time I overnighted in coach, my seat mate was a young woman, a college student, and she kept sliding over and resting her head on my shoulder. I didn't mind that too much but when she awoke and realized she was cuddling up to a strange old man she recoiled in dismay and...

Sitting in Northeast Regional with extended knee?

As a person with disabilities myself, I think you qualify easily for the term PWD, even though it sounds as if you might rather classify yourself as a PWI (Person with an Inconvenience). I admire your gumption, though.

Booking the H room at AGR

This is for fellow gimps who use the H room: The other day I called Amtrak Guest Rewards to book a H room on No. 7 because I didn't trust the website to give me a room in the base sleeper. Didn't want to get a car that might be eliminated at the last minute. Online, the H room for that date in...

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

Am going to book a sleeper on the Builder for October but will do it by phone through Guest Rewards in order to get the 730 car.

    California Zephyr discussion

I suspect the near-zero temps in Chicago shut down the car wash . . . and a late arrival of No. 6 may have required a quick turnaround of the consist in any case.

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

My wife reports the local Chicago suburban Jewel Foods (big supermarket chain) cashier machines reject her AGR card every time and she has to use another card. We use the AGR card for everything else and it works fine. Can't figure out why Jewel hates AGR. In another development, In our neck of...

    Passengers with severe allergies?

There are two considerations about service animals and allergies: the law and ethics. The ADA gives service animals priority in the law. Ethics requires compromise if at all possible, for both parties have health needs. Ethical service animal handlers will work with the attendant and conductor...

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

I travel often on Amtrak with a service dog. OBS and conductors (with one exception some years ago) have been remarkably accommodating, especially with the dog's relief needs. The only difficulties (and there really haven't been so many) have been with fellow passengers unaware of service dog...

    Pets on Long Distance Trains

I'm a service dog handler and agree completely with Amtrak's actions. These rule-breaking shenanigans with non-service animals just makes things more difficult for us.

    Booking an Accessible Bedroom

I'm a rollator pilot and have booked H rooms regularly without event.

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

I take the train not because I love trains (all right, I do love them), but because I use a service dog AND a rollator or medical scooter, and traveling with those on the train is ever so much easier than flying.

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

FNBO posted my points as soon as the statement closed. Non-event.

    Hearing Loss is a Disability

I've never declared my deafness as a disability on the Amtrak site because it doesn't get me any accommodations on the train. But I do declare my mobility disability and use of a service dog because that gets me the H room. Many years ago on the Lake Shore Limited, a conductor put a large...

    Hearing Loss is a Disability

Amen . . . but since I employ a service dog for my deafness, preboarding is very convenient, even though we're stared at. We get our choice of overhead storage, anyway. Often upon deboarding I am greeted with a wheelchair. Evidently airline manifests list deaf passengers as "disabled," which...

    Hearing Loss is a Disability

I'd argue we deafoes need visual forms of announcements. Some stations and trains do have those, but most don't. It's incumbent upon us to be constantly aware of where we are so we get off at the proper stop.
