    How to get seats together

While I disagree with the attitude, I can sympathize. I take the train with my 7 year old often and some conductors could really help the situation by addressing the “campers”. I’ve had to ride in the aisle while people all over the train have a Sherpa’s worth of luggage in the adjoining seat...

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

Safety related information is provided in placard or safety card form. Emergency egresses are lighted and instructions printed. If you’re blind announcements are made. Since planes rarely make intermediate stops, I fail to see why other information would be necessary. What information would you...

    Acela 21 (Avelia Liberty) development, testing and deployment (2018 - 1Q 2024)

I fail to see how airliners are at all inaccessible to anyone? If Amtrak wanted to use aisle chairs, bring food to peoples seats, accommodate restrooms on their level, then by all means they are providing the same access. The fact of the matter is with jetbridges or ramps, dedicated staff for...

Amtrak BidUp (Bidding for Upgrades - Business Class, First Class, and Sleepers)

When do you find out if your bid was successful? I bid for buinsess class for my family tomm thinking that might afford us a bit of a better chance to sit next to each other on a northeast regional from Connecticut to Back Bay tomm. Thanks.

    Dinner tonight on SW Chief

Kinda. Theres a single logbook with primary (white) pages and secondary (yellow) pages that attach to the white pages. The second copy (yellow) is held at a station in case there is an issue once airborne. Any discrepancy gets immediately entered into a computer. Most airlines have software that...

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

I might have missed it somewhere, are the plans to have a dual mode locomotive on each end, or a single locomotive on one end and a cab car on the other? With HEP etc would a single dual mode locomotive have enough power and acceleration and range (diesel mode) to efficiently operate in both...

One of my daughters just said (she will not be taking Amtrak for a long time)

The airlines aren’t any better lately. This comes from an airline pilot. I’ve never seen anything like this. Part of it is lack of staff, too slow a ramp up after vaccine distribution, and a significant part has been absolutely lousy weather in the northeast, which obviously effects us more then...

Why aren't overnight trains able to compete with flying?

It’s still pretty minimal compared to cruise and climb. A v2500 and a pw1100g are between 600-800lbs/hr in descent in an a321ceo/neo. Fuel burn on the takeoff roll up to 10,000 can be as high as 12,000lbs/hr per engine. Cruise depending on weight is between 2500-3200 lbs/hr/eng depending on ceo...

Traveling cross country with an 8 month old baby in coach?

Aircraft have heppa filtered air that filters the entire air supply every few minutes. Im not sure that the plane is any more or less “dangerous” then a train, but the train you certainly are going to have far more hours of exposure to different people. 42 hours in couch in masks with a child...

Whats with freight delays and speed restrictions?

I’ve departed LAX to JFK and been speed restricted most of the way, .77 or.76. Obviously the heavier and higher you are though and sometimes “unable” is the only thing you can say. A full a321 loaded with gas near max recommended ceiling will not go .74 if assigned. I’m sure the OP is stirring...

Replacement of the Connecticut River bridge should be on the list as well.

Actual Size of Acela First Overhead 25" Spinner

The bins on the Acela are larger then any I’ve seen on an aircraft. Even oversized luggage shouldn’t be a problem.

Actual Size of Acela First Overhead 25" Spinner

My oversized flight crew luggage works roll aboard fit no problem. The lockers on the Acela are very large.

Amtrak Asks Two People Who Use Wheelchairs To Pay $25,000 For A Ride (NPR 1/17/20)

This isn’t true. I’ve had 85 wheelchairs passengers on a West Palm Beach to Boston flight during “migration” season. Now, there’s no way the flight will be on time, especially if you have a significant amount of aisle chair passengers on board, but no we don’t have a limit.

    The Boeing MAX 8 Accidents

The XLR is going to be revolutionary for trans Atlantic travel. After that I’m guessing Airbus will fund the development of the a321+... I rewinged a321 with laminar flow and extended wingspan with folding wingtips to allow access to current icao group 3 gates.

    The Boeing MAX 8 Accidents

All the tooling for the 757 was destroyed years ago. Building a 757NG would basically require a new ground up effort, and if you do that then just go ahead and fund the NSA. Also, no engine is currently available in the 757s required thrust rating.

RFP issued for Amfleet I replacement

I’ve ridden the Stadler Flirt over in Switzerland. It was nice but the seating was a bit odd at different levels depending on your position in the car. I think at least it was the flirt. Cool cool train... narrow gauge and a cog capability to climb the steep mountain passes between Lucern and...

Our crew hotel is the Fairmont. Its very nice and looks to be fairly reasonably priced. The breakfast is great.

Why trains instead of planes for long distance?

Why not? Ironically my best friend in the world is the same way. His sister in law just announced she’s getting married... in California. We’re in Connecticut. His phobia of flying is so great that he’s going to likely take Amtrak or drive. Heck, I’ve given him opportunities to even occupy...

Why trains instead of planes for long distance?

I don’t often upgrade to buisness on Amtrak because I’m usually on sub 2 hour trains. Where I have and always do is in Europe. The buisness class upgrades on OBB, Bahn, and Trenitalia is night and day. Far less crowded, far more space, and a very reasonable up-charge.
