Rental Car agency close to EMY

Looks like it's best to arrive in SF or Oakland/Emeryville on Friday (or before) and turn in the car Friday afternoon. You might save a day's car rental cost that you can apply aginst a hotel. FYI - If you want to stay in SF, Amtrak provides a connecting shuttle from downtown SF on Saturday morning,

Rental Car agency close to EMY

The airport is a long way south from Amtrak in Emeryville. According to Google Maps, Enterprise Rent-a-Car has three locations close to the Antrak station. I don't know if they still do, but Enterprise used to pick up and drop off customers. You might try calling those branches to see if they...

    Cascades #516 trainsets and features

That's good to know. I'll defintely request a seat assignment at that time.

Thanks! I'll just try to be one of the first to board in order to get a single seat. Maybe I can plead old age (83) :)

    Cascades #516 trainsets and features

I am taking #516 Business Class from Seattle to Vancouver next Tuesday, and I'm a little confused. I'll be grateful for any help with the following questions. I have heard there are two different types of trainsets on this route. Is this correct? And if so, is there any way of knowing in...

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

I To each his own, :) I much prefer the upper level, especially on the scenic routes. The room will be quieter not so close to the tracks, and being close to the door won't be troublesome for the 22 hours or so I will be on board.

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

Update to my original post. I called AGR again today, and the agent emphatically confirmed that There would have to be a roomette available at the same quoted points price for me to change with no additional cost. But then she asked me to wait while she looked for such a roomette, and low and...

Catching the Sunset Limited from the Coast Starlight

I agree. That means you would have to book the CS for a day earlier than your original plan, not the SL for a day later.

Connecting Bus SFC-EMY when Train 14 is delayed

I will be taking CS #14 north from Emeryville. My ticket starts from San Francisco on the short thruway bus connection, scheduled to depart 8:50pm to connect with the CS regularly scheduled to depart EMY at 9:41pm. What happens if the CS is significantly late (say two or more hours)? Does the...

Thanks, I'll try again and escalate if necessary. To clarify, I got the same answer from both an Amtrak agent and an AGR rep. I bought the ticket with points. Could that make a difference?

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

I made the mistake of booking online and was automatically assigned roomette 13 on the lower level. I don't believe the room assignment was displayed before I clicked purchase. When I called to ask for a change to the upper level. I was told I could do so for a higher bucket price. What a...

Amtrak announces Simplified Fares coming soon

Yes, it could present a problem. But in any event, it's probably not wise to cancel a credit card before all refundable purchases on it have been used or have expired. Of course, this rule only works if you have the option not to cancel the card.

Coast to Coast, and South to North, a first Amtrak trip

I agree in rinciple with Boulder CO and Palmland, but with a couple of variations. I would take the Cardinal (Train #1) instead of the Capitol Limited from Washington, DC to Chicago. It's a much more scenic route. Then the City of New Orleans (Train #2) from Chicago to New Orleans through the...

Travel from Vancouver to San Diego advice?

According to the Rome2Rio website, it's a 22 minute bus ride costing between $1 -$3. You could perhaps start your research here. https://www.rome2rio.com/map/San-Luis-Obispo/Pismo-Beach

    Beer in Roomette?

I bring a bottle of red wine. Can be re-corked (sometimes I bring the screw-cap type), stores easily in nooks and crannies, and doesn't need to be chilled.

Coast Starlight or Sunset Limited for our next trip?

Perhaps wandering off topic a bit, but if you do fly one-way out of Vancouver, your fare quote may be in Canadian dollars, and you should discount it by 25% to get the USD equivalent. Don't forget to factor in taxes; they're usually higher in Canada.

Coast Starlight or Sunset Limited for our next trip?

If you have the time, blow the budget and do both routes as one trip. Start in New Orleans on the westbound SL. Yes, the early morning LA arrival might be a little taxing, but there's a convenient transfer interlude (if you arrive on time) and a great breakfast spot before boarding the CS. In my...
