NY Times: Anderson out, William Flynn in

My hope is that as a former VP of strategic planning at CSX, he knows how to speak "freight railroad" which would definitely help Amtrak's corridor vision. Otherwise this guy seems like your classic cost cutter.

NY Times: Anderson out, William Flynn in

To me this feels like Anderson was brought in to do the dirty work of a turnaround. This is now the guy who will be the long term guy who will build off that foundation. Being that this is the same board who appointed Anderson, I don't think there will be any significant changes to the course...

NY Times: Anderson out, William Flynn in

While Trump may have some influence on the pick via the Transportation department, this is a largely the same board that chose Anderson.

NY Times: Anderson out, William Flynn in

Being that Anderson was on a short term contract with bonuses over base pay, I don't think Anderson's tenure was ever meant to be long term. Anderson was the turnaround specialist, this guy is probably the long term pick. As a former CSX executive and background in transportation, he seems...

    Nashville to Atlanta line

While that doesn't kill Amtrak setting up shop there, it won't help. Though with the lessened freight activity, They might be about to partially sell the area to Amtrak. I'm just skeptical that it's really going to happen since Georgia claims to have no idea what's going on. Seems to me they'd...

More restrictive ticketing non refundable no changes coming March 1, 2020

I actually don't mind this change. Amtrak always couldn't provide a good answer on why you would want to pay more for the Value fare, because it was the same accommodation for basically the same conditions. With saver fares going non refundable, there's a real difference between Saver and Value.

Bombardier planning on selling rail division to Alstom

So when does Siemens try to torpedo this? Alstom torpedoed the merger when Siemens tried to do this. Turnabout is fair play.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

Don't the Chargers use Urea? How is Amtrak going to handle urea refills en route?

Richard Anderson replacing Wick Moorman as Amtrak CEO

Speaking of corruption, we also all forget that the Talgos occurred because of a no bid contract the previous administration gave out along with some generous tax credits for Talgos factory. The whole thing was completely mishandled from start to finish.

NYCT Chief Andy Byford resigns: How he improved NYC transit

I suspect he's going to look for an agency that is less of a political animal after his experience with the MTA.

    Full length Domes for sale

At this point I wouldn't want to touch anything Bombardier. They can't even get their European division (traditionally the good side) right anymore.

    Full length Domes for sale

I remember the first time I took the Rio Grande Scenic when IP was just starting the tourist operation there. It was an amazing ride in the dome from La Veta to Alamosa. Unfortunately over the last few years the operation has been in major decline, especially when they went to less than daily...

Restore Passenger Service to Southern Montana?

Actually they have thought about it. It's in one of the congressional hearings that they are waiting on the reauthorization to get further direction from Congress (preferably some form of funding) on the future of the LD network before they proceed on the bilevel equipment process. So until that...

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

Correct, I'm not saying that Amtrak should be priced like the hotel. You get a lot more with a sleeper ticket than just a bed. It's just an easy point of reference.

New dining options (flex dining) effective October 1, 2019

That's still better than a Super 8 (I've stayed in many of them recently). Having said that, you only pay 60$ for a Super 8 compared to many hundreds for a sleeper. So I'd like to see at least Holiday inn/ Hampton Inn quality, which quite frankly is where the previous service was at.

Siemens Caltrans/IDOT Venture design, engineering, testing and delivery (2012-2024)

The RFP was basically open ended to give the manufacturers a chance to submit anything they could provide for Amtrak to evaluate. Basically this just means all the proposals are in and Amtrak is evaluating which proposal they prefer. I have to think that with how open ended the RFP was, they...

    Huge News from Virginia

The common carrier freight rights is almost what derailed Caltrains electrification. UP resisted quite a bit, despite having no ownership. Eventually UP got some concessions and relented. CSX seems to be more in the mode of "we're washing our hands of these lines." Hopefully Virginia negotiated...

    Brightline Trains Florida discussion

That's pretty massively offensive what you just said. I'm a civil engineer and vote mostly R, I'd like to think I'm not stupid or an idiot. I have reasons for voting the way I do. If these are the kind of comments tolerated at AU, I might as well check out the community now.

    Huge News from Virginia

With this, Amtrak is giving even stronger hints that their next rolling stock purchase will be DEMUs. Gardner expressly mentioned the need to "eliminate the locomotive change at Washington DC." Maybe that's full electrification to Richmond, but nothing in VA's announcement indicates that.

Talgos on the Move for Good!

It is interesting to see how relations between talgo and WaDOT aren't very good right now. I suspect Amtrak providing the other 2 trainsets for service and Oregon's (completely correct) insistence on keeping their two sets in service might eventually nudge WaDOT to order talgo sets in the name...
