Can Union Pacific bring back their own passenger trains?

UP has offered some public rides on Big Boy runs in the past few years, but the prices have been astronomical.

Can Union Pacific bring back their own passenger trains?

Union Pacific has absolutely no interest in running passenger trains. Right now, they're in the process of turning over their Chicago commuter trains entirely over to Metra. Unlike BNSF, they have no other contracts to run commuter trains anywhere, they sure wouldn't want to get back into the...

    Trapped on train at CUS?

There are a lot of holes in this story. Obviously she got off the train, so somebody (Amtrak police, yard workers) must have found her after the call (from her? from her mother?). The train was not properly searched after arrival. She was on the CONO, so it was daylight by the time it got to...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

I think the nine-car concept will be a "core' train with the ability to add coaches and sleepers on head and rear ends.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

All kinds of agencies have looked at those Santa Fe hi-levels for years, and nobody is interested.

    Midwest Venture discussion 2023 Q3 -2024

There are no Vemture cafe cars in service yet on any Midwestern route., so the old cafe/business cars are still running.

Metrolink (Los Angeles) outage in December 2023

This seems like quite a radical approach to updating the signal system. It sees Metrolink could have done this over a longer period, allowing Amtrak to run some LD and Surfliner trains. This seems like something the UK would do over Christmas, but the whole British rail system shuts down on...

College football fans reserve entire Amtrak coach

Reserving an entire coach doesn't seem like that big a deal. Now if they reserved a whole train or ran a special train, that would be something.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

According to Trains News Wire, this three Superliner with one business car was run as a salute to CP and its top train handling rating. CP employees and families were invited to ride it. I doubt if there was any "road testing" involved.

Miles rides VIA from London to Windsor

I don't think Miles intends to be taken seriously. He's just a guy who enjoys riding trains and buses with his transit fan buddies. You're not going to get a serious analysis from him.

Brightline Trains Florida discussion 2023 Q4

Wouldn't it be rather easy to add luggage capacity to Disney buses. Just buy some new buses. It's not that hard.

Reserve Fleet, Retention Toilets and such logistical matters

And now those 70-year-old cars are at the end of their useful life, with no replacements in sight.

    Suluki/Illini consist

This problem has been going on for way too long. The CN could easily fix these if they want to,. Illinois DOT, Gov. Pritzker and Sen. Durbin should be on CN's case every day until CN goes out and resets the circuits.

    Suluki/Illini consist

    1. If people buy it, why not? 2. This involves CN's ridiculous axle count requirements. Depanding Superliners is a recent CN demand. Why not just fix the track circuits so they work like every other grade crossing in the country. 3. Those sleepers were just probably sitting around the yard...

    Southwest Chief discussion

Since the Horizon is in front of the baggage car, I would say it is deadheading to Chicago, perhaps en route to Beech Grove.

San Francisco - Los Angeles Night Train proposals

all these proposals to bring back 1950'a style trains have been a failure. I don't think this plan will go anywhere. The cars built in the 1940's and 50's are way beyond use on a daily basis -- just look at the Canadian. It's days are numbered without new cars.

    Midwest Venture introduction

The whole using Superliners on the Illini/Saluki is the result of demands by the CN. For years, CN has insisted that Amtrak run longer trains in order to activate crossing gates and signals. Recently, CN has insisted that Amtrak use Superliners. This whole crossing activation is a real crock...

    Quad cities train in news

It seems pretty clear that Iowa Intestate is waffling on how much money they want to operate the trains, which I believe would be two round-trips per day. Hard to see how that would interfere greatly with their two or three freight trains a day. The Iowa isn't exactly the BNSF main. This does...
