    Diner on the Cardinal

I'm debating whether to book a June 2018 trip (DC -> CHI) on the Cardinal or the Capitol Ltd. I've never been a fan of the Diner Lite experience on some of the Viewliner routes, so am leaning toward the Capitol Ltd. I've seen conflicting information online, but can anyone confirm does (or...

    Empire Builder flood disruptions

According to the Billings Gazette: "Amtrak service held up The floods across the Hi-Line have disrupted Amtrak service. Passengers hoping to depart from Havre reported canceled trains on Wednesday. The interruption in service was continuing Thursday and Friday. An Amtrak spokesman in Chicago...

    AGR Changes to Ticketed Itinerary

Thanks for the info. Luckily yes, I do have just enough banked points to make a new reservation if needed. I guess in that case I will still get the 30k points back once they process the unused tickets.

    AGR Changes to Ticketed Itinerary

All, I have an AGR reservation for next week on EB & CS. 2 Zone Bedroom for my son and I. It's looking more and more like I need to start worry about the flooding in North Dakota possibly impacting this trip. I've started to look into the "Plan B" scenarios. I already have the physical...

    Trip to Portland, ME

Enjoy the cafe car menu on the Downeaster while you're on it. They have some regional favorites added to the menu (and Coke not Pepsi) so it's not your typical NEC cafe car. If you went by bus, other than sneaking a view of Portsmouth while crossing the Piscataqua River Bridge there really...

Rooms unavailable train 49, Lake Shore Ltd

I'm in the Boston sleeper for a trip to Chicago in April and nabbed a Roomette at low bucket rate. But -- I had to book that back in July. They really do fill up fast.

Viewliner Bedroom - Unable to book for a family of 3

Thanks! Makes sense now. I did peek in the bedroom last summer when I was in a Roomette with just my son. The lower bunk in the Bedroom definitely looked wide enough to accommodate the 2 little ones with me up top.

Viewliner Bedroom - Unable to book for a family of 3

I'm doing some planning for a trip with my son (6yo) and daughter (3yo) on the LSL out of Boston through to CHI. I figured a Bedroom would be perfect for the trip, but apparantly Amtrak's reservation system disagrees: Problem with Selected Accommodations: The accommodation you have selected is...

    Amenity Kits

I was in a Roomette on the Lake Shore for the BOS-CHI run last June. No amenity kit provided. Enjoy the trip! I'm counting down the days (21 left) until our BOS-CHI-EMY trip.

    Amtrak Desktop Wallpaper

There are some nice high-resolution shots as part of the Amtrak Agent Support program. Link here: Amtrak Photos At the bottom of the page is a link to a ZIP with the high-resolution versions of the photos. They make for some nice backgrounds. I'm using one of the California Zephyr shots as...

    Superliner Bedroom Closet

Thanks! I guess it is safe to assume it's a closet for a jacket and not intended for a garment bag. Mike

    Superliner Bedroom Closet

I've done a few searches on the forum here as well as Amtrak's site and a few others. One thing I've failed to find is any info on what size the closet is in a Superliner Bedroom. I know it's a "small" closet, but does anyone know the width/height of it? Just curious how my existing garment...

    Lake Shore Limited trackwork

Based on the online reservations, it looks like eastbound 448 makes it all the way to South Station on Thr and Fri evenings. That gives them the consist to do the return trip westbound 449 on Fri and Sat afternoons. Right now my reservation is safe (Saturday westbound), but will keep the Acela...

    Lake Shore Limited trackwork

Ugh. I sure hope this is truly done by "early April". I'm on the LSL with my 6 year old in Apr 17th. Will not be impressed a bus trip down the Mass Pike for the first 5+ hours.

    Boarding In Chicago

Just out of curiosity, when do they normally start boarding the sleeper passengers for the EB and CZ departures from the lounge? Assuming they are expecting an on-time departure that is.

    "Testing" Wi-Fi on the Starlight

It's very rare for any industry to choose the satellite based option for Internet, especially if it's a shared connection. The systems being deployed on the US airliners are also terrestrial based systems. A strategically located system of ground systems to support the common airline routes...

    laptop internet access

Alan, You're right. The Downeaster service uses cell phone towers. Similar to what MBTA and bus providers have signed on for service. Satellite based broadband is much slower, high latency, and does require a lot more expensive hardware. I would think in the NEC the WiFi solution via cell...
