Questions regarding Southwest Chief and Sunset Limited

I am looking at a West Coast baseball trip this spring (hopefully!) and I have some questions. I live in the Midland/Odessa area of Texas. The nearest station to me is Alpine, but since I have to drive a few hours anyway my options are this: 1. Drive to Albuquerque or Lamy and take the Chief...

Effect of early January 2022 Virginia Snowstorm on Amtrak

What happens if a train is delayed due to weather conditions like this and the crew have timed out?

Did the Private Railroads consider not joining Amtrak?

I've heard numerous of times that the Santa Fe considered to run the Super Chief/El Capitan and the Grand Canyon well after 1971. However, I really haven't found anything that wasn't speculative about the Santa Fe not joining Amtrak. Has anyone found anything that seems this belief is...

    Palm Springs Station

Yeah I am going to fly. Too much of a pain logistically, which is always the issue. Too bad there isn't a section that separates at El Paso and heads to the DFW area. It would give passengers plenty of time to enjoy El Paso as the portion from Houston would certainly be delayed from that bottle...

    Palm Springs Station

I’m currently looking at possibly taking the Sunset Limited from Alpine TX to Palm Springs CA for a boys trip. That being said the arrival times for me are not the best and may force me on a plane. However, my bigger question is has anyone taken this train to this station and how do you get into...

New Amtrak Proposed Routes Map has Dropped

I know I am late to the party on this, but I really don't see this helping. I would rather focus on a few projected high rail speed corridors and focus on that. I know we are love LD trains, but we need high speed rail corridors with the track bed and right of way. I would rather have 2...

    Brightline Orlando extension

My wife is from Melbourne so I am there often. However, I didn't notice until now that the FEC went back to their old paint livery.

That's because the Three Rivers was the last train to have Heritage sleepers right?

Amtrak CEO Flynn’s Letter to Congress

He actually mentions the need to grow and add routes. Color me shocked this was brought up.

Restoring Service to Southern Montana (NYT Article)

Pretty generic. Although the $50 million start up cost was an interesting figure. Let's see if this gets an interest and if Montana wants to fork over the $$$$.

Restoring Service to Southern Montana (NYT Article)

I can't get past the pay wall, does it say anything about local state funding? Also has Montana Rail Link have any history with Amtrak?

    Texas Eagle ~ a puzzle

Many ranchers in town still come into town that way. I haven't ridden the TE since 1990 and I was a child. My nearest station is Alpine and it does make sense to take the TE/Sunset to go to LA, but anything east? Forget about it. Maybe to St. Louis, but the routing in Texas is terrible.

    Gravity toilets

I was reading how some countries in Eastern European countries might still have these. I think I recall using one in Texas in the late eighties on some Heritage equipment. Do any of yall recall their use on Amtrak and maybe some funny stories around them?

    Sleeper Pricing?

I was looking this up not even noticing this thread was around... Based on a 1920's pricing of the New York Central's 20th Century Limited cost adjusted for inflation came to this: NY-CHI pricing with Pullman was about $550 one way. Average dinner cost about $50 and breakfast was $20 for eggs...

    Worst Passenger Rail Experience Ever?

2009 Took the Zephyr from Denver to Chicago and a connection to Memphis on the City of new Orleans. Zephyr ran over 7 hours late and I was going to miss my connection. I was stressing the entire time, however luckily extreme cold in Chicago delayed the City for 4 hours. I made my train and the...

    Track Condition

Here we are complaining about this and for years trains would travel at much higher speeds on jointed much smaller tracks. Let alone many where wooden cars. I understand road beds might have been in better condition for passenger rail but still.

Amtrak's own hypothetical national track infrastructure discussion

Even if Amtrak moved out to State College, I know many who don't even know Amtrak runs to Pittsburgh. I was in Perry County PA with my boss who was born raised in Philly and lives out in Lancaster, and when the Pennsylvanian passed he was shocked that Amtrak went out there. Living in PA it...
