Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Hey! We don’t have a monopoly on political leaders with ridiculous haircuts! :)

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Oh, I'll ramble off topic certainly, I just felt bad for the poor fellow who just wanted to know how much better a Room was than a Roomette! Yeah, the food. It's not great, and you're certainly not going to want to pay a high premium for it, but it's fine, you find the one or two things you...

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

First - I’m happy to that Denver is still a dinner time stop and that the Denver station offers lots of good options. Second - getting in at Portland and going to Sacramento at this time of year is mostly dark and black. There’s not much to see. Third - Sacramento. Wow. That’s a long, dull...

    Bedroom vs. Roomette?

Hey, I’m happy to talk everyone’s ear off about my trip but I’d like to move it out of this persons room vs roomette thread... and into my thread which also kind of de-railed into talking about my trip...

    Bedroom vs. Roomette?

Well, we spent two nights in Portland but otherwise it was lots of trains (and a looooooooong boring wait in Sacramento on Thanksgiving morning). 1) the food. Well... I went into it expecting the worst. I read a lot of, shall I say, less than kind assessments of the food. It wasn’t good...

    Bedroom vs. Roomette?

Perhaps I had an unusually clean trip on the EB and CZ, but the public bathrooms were never anything but clean and tidy all trip, particularly the one upstairs, which we used most often

    Bedroom vs. Roomette?

Really? Wow - I thought it was 4-6 inches (and it felt like less) between the lower bunk and sink, but I didn’t measure or anything. I guess your mileage may vary on that one. I was sleeping in a t-shirt and ragged shorts on the train, so I never thought about appropriate attire going to the...

    Bedroom vs. Roomette?

I just got off my first ever trip on Amtrak Sunday morning - and my wife and I went on a trip From Cleveland to Chicago to Portland to Sacramento to Chicago to Cleveland - We took Bedrooms the whole way, but on our very last leg after we woke up around Toledo - our cabin attendant asked us...

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

We’ve got about five hours in Sacramento, of course with the caveat that delays can eat up into that. It’s 6 to 11 am roughly, so I’m not sure what options will be there. That, along with the shutdowns make things difficult. The shutdown in Oregon, compared to what I’m used to in Ohio, is...

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

So, we leave our day in Portland to return via the Coast Starlight to Sacramento, then the California Zephyr to Chicago, then the Lake Shore Limited to Cleveland. Some observations from a first time Amtrak-traveler. 1) the rooms are small. I mean, I KNEW they were small going in, and I...

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Well, I passed on it as I know exactly what these taste like, but breakfast options were a Jimmy Dean sausage muffin and a Jimmy Dean breakfast bowl. The boxes were there to pick from, so it wasn’t “like” a jimmy dean microwave breakfast, they were exactly that. I don’t hate those things, but I...

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Both my wife and I have one. As we sit on the Capitol limited, I realize the best option is to keep one change of clothes and a backpack in the room and keep the rest downstairs in the rack.

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Lol - as I sit in the Cleveland station awaiting my train, you have all thoroughly discouraged me from checking a bag.

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Yeah - we're diving in the deep end with this. We're pretty equipped for the slowness, stops and delays. Looking forward to sitting with a book, a glass of wine (or beer?) watching the world roll by at speeds where you can take in the surroundings... as well as travelling through places we've...

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Sure! I'm new to this whole train thing, so they may seem pretty simplistic compared to some of you who've done this for years. I see people here with tens of thousands (and many more!) miles, whereas I'm forty two, and my whole experience is that I took a train from Niagara Falls to Toronto once.

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

That is kinda what I was wondering - if maybe there was no baggage car, or if the baggage car went to Seattle instead of Portland.

Checked Baggage (Cleveland to Portland and return: Capitol Ltd, Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, CZ, CL)?

Hi! I have a trip coming up this week where we are taking the Capitol Limited to Empire Builder to Portland, and then the Cost Starlight to California Zephyr to Capitol Limited home, bedrooms the whole way. Our home terminal is Cleveland, the layovers are in Chicago and Sacramento, and the...

Politicking across the Midwest/ Build Back Better Express

This is nice. One minor quibble from an Ohioan, that’s not an oil pump, it’s a natural gas pump. Farmers lease drilling rights to natural gas companies on their land.
