Negative long distance trip review article based lack of value and inedible food

Fair enough. Farmers under 80 would likely eat early and that is understandable due to their line of work. Still, you said 5.30-6.30 is common. In that instance 5 would still be earlier than is common lol.

Negative long distance trip review article based lack of value and inedible food

5pm is early for most people I know. A “typical” white collar workday is 9-5 so… We usually eat between 6.30-7. Honestly I don’t know anyone under 80 who eats at 5.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

From an accounting standpoint you are correct. From a public relations and optics standpoint I disagree with you though. Unless food was removed from all fares completely and a pre-paid voucher type system was used where people who wanted meals could buy vouchers for them (or something of the...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I would say at least a couple hundred less. Not just for the cost of the food but for the inconvenience of having to carry your own. I hate when transportation companies try to “decouple” formerly included items from their fares and say it is so people have a “choice to pay for what they use”...

What are the first class on-board amenities?

It’s also unlimited nonalcoholic drinks on the western trains too. At least it was on the Builder last week.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

THIS!! Don’t get me wrong, I DO tip but it’s mostly a small amount like $10 to show appreciation for the porter/attendant/whatever they are now called. Cruise ship workers get tipped much higher as they work for basically peanuts; amounts that wouldn’t even be legal for US based employees...

He wrote “On Cunard it was 5% tip of the room cost and separate for wait staff.”

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I don’t worry so much about social distancing as I’m fully vaxxed. However I don’t think it’s elitist to feel a first class passenger who paid $1000 for an xcountry trip to be treated differently from a coach passenger who could have paid as low as $100 during the latest promo. Amtrak needs to...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Wow your Cunard trip must have been a very long time ago if you tipped based on percentages. I sailed with them in 2015 and 2017 and they have adopted a set daily service charge like every other passenger ship line. I think it was $11.50 pppd added to your stateroom at the time I sailed.

There were decent fakes on the all the tables of the Empire Builder last week. It was nice to have some kind of nicety. They were not present on the Lake Shore Limited though.

Viewliner II Part 4: Sleeping Car production, delivery, deployment

Thanks! It was on the Silver Meteor end to end.

The water pressure is indeed better...more akin to a normal faucet at home rather than the power-washer jets of years past.

What is your daily routine on LD trains?

I did. On both trains. They are really nice. I looked into the old cars when walking through and they were so shoddy, bordering on disgusting when considering they are a first class product. They really should accelerate the roll out to all eastern trains. We are booked on the LSL in May and now...

Historical Discussion: Cities with two or more Amtrak stations

New Haven has two stations as well. Are Boston and LA the only cities in the country with three stations in the city proper?

What is your daily routine on LD trains?

I’m on the Silver Star now and had breakfast this morning and dinner last night in the diner car. It was the flex meals of course but sleeper car passengers can sit there to eat. Same last week on the Silver Meteor.

I took the picture when the sink wasn’t fully closed. The light does go off once then sink is latched.
