Least scenic Amtrak route/section of route?

CZ in the Moffat Tunnel, not too scenic.

    Should they make the bed?

Thanks for all the responses. I will certainly now try writing a letter to Amtrak!

    Should they make the bed?

My companion and I had a wonderful trip to California that included a mostly very pleasant segment on the Coast Starlight from Oakland to Los Angeles. I guess the Starlight is running a later schedule now, because it was roughly 11am to 11pm. Anyway we booked ahead and got the roomette for a...

Any way to tell which locomotive type when you book?

Hi All, I've been away from this forum for a while busy doing other stuff. I haven't been away from riding Amtrak though. I missed the folks here, glad to be back with a question for you. A recent trip from PHL to BOS had me on the #194 being pulled by one of the older AEM-7 type locomotives...

    Self Transfer ticket eliminated

I picked up tickets for a trip from Portland Maine to Philadelphia with a Downeaster segment both ways, and was surprised to be handed only two tickets. The notorious self-transfer ticket (no value, no points) from BON to BBY was eliminated, the ticket agent said. This ticket was always a...

What is a reasonable distance for commuter rail?

I can think of a few long rail commutes I've done (not every day tho): 1. Sacramento to Oakland (Capitol Corridor): 80 miles 2. Stockton to Oakland (San Joaquin): 80 miles 3. Stockton to San Jose (ACE Train): 80 miles 4. Portland Maine to Boston (Downeaster): 100 miles

    Why three timetables?

I'm wondering why the NEC has three separate timetables: I haven't studied them in detail, but is there overlap between them? If my travel is primarily between Boston and Philadelphia, should I use #2 or #3 or both?

Moving to Maine on the Train

The San Joaquins have checked baggage, cab forward, no baggage car. That's why I was able to check my bags in SKN (even though the went the first segment to SAC on a Thruway bus).

Moving to Maine on the Train

Here is the follow up to the story. I made it to Maine with all my stuff. When I got to Sacramento, I inquired at the baggage counter and they said the bags had already been sent to Boston three days before. I asked about the 2 day limit and any late fees and he said there would be none...

    SanJoaquinRider is now DowneasterPassenger

I am moving from California to Maine (by Amtrak of course) and changing my Amtrak Forum identity. Goodbye to the San Joaquin line after 4 years. Thanks to all the conductors, assistant conductors, LSAs, ticket agents, fellow passengers and all the others who made it a great time. Riding the...

Moving to Maine on the Train

I was worried about the weight of my bags and didn't have a good scale at home, so I asked a friend with pickup to drive me down to the station so that I could weigh them on the "official" scale. Not only were they all under 50lbs, the agent offered to check them then and there, a full 3 days...

Moving to Maine on the Train

How about getting luggage from the train to the bus? Will a Red Cap assist all the way to the bus terminal. Even though it is "in" South Station, it is more "adjacent" than "in".

Moving to Maine on the Train

Could you buy a ticket for a phantom person and be allowed 2 more carry-ons? Like they sell extra seats to people with musical instruments?

Moving to Maine on the Train

According to my research, the Downeaster has no checked bags and a limit of 2 carry-ons per passenger. South Station is the end of the line for Amtrak checked bags.

Moving to Maine on the Train

I am moving from SKN to POR on Amtrak. I have compressed possessions into 8 bags (2 carry on + 3 free checked bags + 3 more checked bags for $10 each). I can only get the checked bags as far as BOS on Amtrak. My fiancee will meet me there and then each of us will put 2 bags each on Concord...
