Is a roomette for 2 twice the price as it would be for one? Sorry for the basic questions but I'm still not familiar with looking this up on the Amtrak website. Some day I"ll schedule several hours to learn how to use their pricing system. :)

Thanks for the information. If I were to book this online for the trough rail fare then when and how do I upgrade to a sleeper for a few segments? And when I have the sleeper booked for a segment can I come out and sit in coach or an observation car when I want to?

We are planning a long trip from Denver to Sacramento to Portland to St. Paul. Getting a room for the whole trip seems expensive, so I am wondering if it would be feasible to purchase separate tickets for each segment of the trip? Some tickets would be for just coach and others for a sleeping...

It would be difficult to drive my car from St. Paul to Philadelphia, then take the train to SC, then take my car that is in Philadelphia, from SC to Denver.. etc...

Thank you very much, I truly appreciate all the help. We would love to take the train but the logistics of planning the trip and then the uncertainty of being close to on time are just not worth it. I wonder how many millions of others share my sentiment.

Thank you for your help, now I only have to look up those train names and routes and schedules to plan my trip on what is supposed to be a national rail system. I think we will drive or fly.

Thank you for the chart but the abbreviations mean nothing to someone who is not familiar with Amtrak and since we don't know what dates the fares are for in the future how do use this info to plan a trip?

Huh? Is Amtrak still in the 19th century or what? A confusing hand written chart to show fares? We want to take the train but if the reservation system is any indication of Amtrak's competency we will drive. This is rediculus.
