    U.S./Canada border crossing discussion

The easiest crossing I ever had was entering the US from the Peace Bridge in Buffalo with Michigan plates (this was before 9/11). The US CBP agent didn't even stand up from his perch in the booth. "Citizen?" "U.S." "Anything?" "No." Then I was on my way. It took less than five...

    Long daytime versus overnight?

If you're not specifically sightseeing and are riding in coach, one advantage of overnight is the probable lack of people blabbing loudly on their phones the entire time.

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

I've stayed at the Marriott Orlando Airport Lakeside a few times. Its shuttle usually has a mix of flight crew and regular guests as riders.

Where to find Amtrak Alerts and Notices

Musk probably added pay toilets to X HQ. You can't even view direct links with full comments after the switch if not logged in. No thanks.

Where to find Amtrak Alerts and Notices

I closed my account the day the X name change took effect.

New Orleans to Chicago via Charlottesville VA

For the rest of Charlottesville, the local bus routes are decent. They don't go quite far enough out for Monticello. https://www.charlottesville.gov/879/Transit

Washington DC Union Station redevelpment plans

I used the "Gift Article" link for this one, so most should be able to read it. Feds release updated $8.8 billion redevelopment plan for Union Station

    Bring your own food options?

My Canadian mother told me the story of how she moved to Maine from Toronto in the early '50s with my older half-sister. The mother of one of my sister's new friends asked her if she'd like a tonic, and her response was "No thank you. I'm perfectly healthy."

Fare Buckets - and when do they increase/decrease?

I'd been planning on taking a long rail trip at some point this year, and after several attempts to find a reasonable rate, I've concluded I may as well fly to Singapore or Australia instead.

    Auto Train trip to Florida

Having lived in LA and DC, I found driving in LA a lot less annoying. It's not hard to avoid "the" 405 or "the" 10, but I-66 in Fairfax County, VA drives me nuts every time I have to be on it, whether inside or outside the Beltway. It might be that I got used to 20 miles taking anywhere from 30...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

When the Adirondack was running to Montreal, I left DC at that hour to make the connection at NYP.

    Resort Shirakami Train

The BBC put up an article about slow train travel in Japan. This looks like a nice addition to a few rail bucket lists. https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20230104-japans-beloved-slow-motion-train

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

Exactly. I use my hotel card for rooms, airline cards for flights, and my Reserve for restaurants (major use) and as a backup for hotels and flights on brands other than my main hotel and airline cards.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

I remember picking one up in a cafe car on the NER recently. I prefer Diet Pepsi in general, but Coke Zero works. According to my taste buds, Diet Coke is just vile.

New Amtrak cafe car menus (Aug 2022)

Dry toast would be an improvement over the Jimmy Dean sandwich.

AGR Credit Card change (October 2022)

I just checked. I have five Chase cards and the offer appears on two: Freedom (but not Unlimited) and, surprisingly, Marriott.

Can 15-16 year olds book solo travel on long distance trains?

There are a fair number of college freshmen under 18, even without skipping a grade. I wasn't allowed to skip a grade in elementary school (by the school, not my parents) because I was already the smallest in my class and they thought I'd be teased too much. The joke was on them. Nerds were...

Nice Article on the Coast Starlight

It depends on the site for me. Usually, I can get around them by going into dev mode and tweaking the css, but that's not a solution for most. 12ft.io is a lot faster. San Francisco-based publications know better than to make it so easy that removing/editing the blocking css would work. They'll...
