Dublin to Belfast speed and frequency enhancements

Good news and hope they keep the catering going as the rest of Irish trains may get the 2024 edition of Southern Pacific's "Automatic Buffet Car".

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

If memory serves me correctly, Stadler is the only current manufacturer of bi-level cars. They did a great job with the "Rocky Mountaineer's" Gold Service" cars. Experience is important as I remember what a mistake it was when Amtrak gave the Superliner orders. Comments?

Dreamstar overnight train between San Francisco and Los Angeles?

Much as I would like to see it, I have to ask the following question. I will grant that both endpoints are pretty liberal areas. Would they sing on to "flight shaming" as so much of Europe has?

Dreamstar overnight train between San Francisco and Los Angeles?

It makes sense to me, but with a "split" at San Jose with a part going to Emeryville.

Container Ship strikes and collapses Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge

Going from here in Sarasota to St. Petersburg, I always check the Skyway Bridge status. If wind gust reach over 45 mph, it closes down and huge detour through Tampa is the only way to get there.

East of Mississippi Long Distance (LD) trains 2024

To this Indianapolis native who took the "South Wind" as a kid and teenager, a Chicago-Florida train with one night out would be a winner. A lot of work to be done, to be sure, but the routing should be CHI-IND-LOU-NAS-ATL-JAX. CHI-ATL "DAY" AND ATL-JAX" overnight.

    VIA Ocean discussion

Look closely at the Renaissance diagrams, some of the rooms have their own showers. The Budd cars ones are a bit larger and I think the cars ride better, but someone else can chime in on that topic. I haven't taken this train in years and I remember us having a Drawing Room in the Park Car and...

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Question for my fellow members in the Pacific Northwest as my Kirkland, WA family can't answer the following. I assume the seats in the Business Class/Cafe Horizon Car from Seattle to Vancouver ar 2 & 1. My question is that since my wife and I are traveling together, are the seats fixed or can...

    Atlantic Coast (Silver/Palmetto/Carolinian) Service discussion Q4 2023 - 2024

Having experience with this route even before Amtrak, I'm 74, what makes sense to me is to run Gulf Coast sections of both the "Star" and "Meteor" splitting them off at Jacksonville with the East Coast sections going down the FEC.

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

I have very little faith in Via Rail due to the Canadian government's by-passing of them for their upcoming frequent service project. No matter what equipment replaces their long-distance fleet, it will never be as incredible as the Budd built cars still running. I'd love to see a train with...

New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

I have to wonder if laying the original tracks took less time than getting this train going.

Ground Transport in the Pacific Northwest

As someone who has taken "Executive Class" busses in Mexico, we are not even close!.

    Winter Storm 2024 cancellations

The U.S. Weather Service is forecasting up to 10 feet of snow beginning tomorrow until Sunday in the California Sierras above 5,000 feet. The snowbound "City of San Francisco" on the same route in 1952 was stuck for three days and finally evacuated. I have to wonder if Amtrak will cancel the...

Preferential treatment for California Zephyr w/American View (10004)?

If you have a stomach upset after that dinner, do you have "Amgas"?

VIA Rail Long Distance (LD) and Inter-Regional fleet replacement

Via's "Canadian", thank sot CN's dispatching is a sick joke when it comes to a schedule. It is overpriced, sadly, and the route is not great next to the CP one.

Brunswick to Rockland ME Train Service

The RDC is sixty years old, but VIA still operates them and apparently has few issues. However, the ideal solution is to extend the Downeaster to Rockland but upgrade the track first to het it up to at least 60 mph, Class 3 FRA Standards. Expensive? Yes, it is, but it must be competitive.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Actually, the design dates from the 1960's and the Metroliners.

    Sunset Limited discussion

Thought the Southern Pacific was dead? Think again. What's next, the Automatic Buffet Car?

    Sunset Limited discussion

You are correct, of course. Neither the "Night Riviera" nor the "Calidonian Sleeper" is going to throw you off at a "godly" hour. Blame Amtrak, the Union Pacific and just plain "the passenger comes last".

Why do long distance Amtrak trains travel at very low speeds?

The former SP Coast Line past Atascadero and the Cuesta Garde could be upgraded to 125 mph running if grade crossings were closed and 110 mph if not. San Jose, however, would probably be the end of fast running and there are several other stretches in Southern California that could support it.
