    Sleeper cleanliness observations

Only a very cursory glance. I'll take out my flashlight and explore in the morning. EDIT: To add photos. Actually, not bad. Not as bad as the condom I found inside a pizza box in a dresser at a Marriot once. So that's good.

    Sleeper cleanliness observations

For the window rail, I mean the area in the attached picture. In this bedroom, it's mostly perforated metal, not an adjustable vent - though I have seen the type you mention. Especially where the various metal surfaces ran behind the table - like where the menu is left - clearly hadn't been...

    Sleeper cleanliness observations

Boarded #8 just a bit ago, from SEA. Have a bedroom booked to myself. First, I *don't* intend this as a complaint thread. The room is comfortable, the train left on time, the sleeper attendant is excellent, and I'm looking forward to dinner shortly. There's been a lot of discussion in here...

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train - Guadalajara, Mexico

@jiml Thanks very much for sharing that. I like DownieLive's style (it was one of his videos that turned me on to doing the Rockies to Red Rocks as well). He did the "sunset" trip - which starts with the tour bus, and ends with the train. I kind of suspect he did so because they book up later...

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train - Guadalajara, Mexico

Ah, gotcha. In my head, I was thinking that 2010 was long after the revaluation of the peso (which I just checked happened in '94). I didn't consider how much the exchange rate had shifted, even absent a revaluation. For whatever it may be worth, the basic class, "Express", which now includes...

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train - Guadalajara, Mexico

It was indeed a good way to spend a day/weekend trip. Did you mean 4,500 MXN Pesos? I ask because that's about $246 USD today, which is right on the dot for what we paid, per person, for the "Diamond" class car, with the simpler cars running even less.

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train - Guadalajara, Mexico

I'm still planning to put together a comment for this thread on the general experience (pros and cons both), along with some more photos, but that will take a bit. In the mean time, some general travel advice for anyone else considering taking the trip will be in this comment. We booked about...

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train - Guadalajara, Mexico

Just returned from doing a Saturday trip on the "Tequila Train", in Guadalajara, Mexico, run by Jose Cuervo. (Official site here: Travel in a Real Train with Jose Cuervo Express | Mundo Cuervo) It's a day excursion which includes about 2.5 hours on the train, followed by spending the day in the...

    Rocky Mountaineer discussion

Thanks much for sharing that. Though I've watched Simply Railway videos before, for some reason I hadn't subscribed, and I now have. He did such a great job capturing some of the views, especially on the "Western Half" (which was mostly the second day for him, and the first for my trip). I...

    Rocky Mountaineer discussion

Sure, and I did take additional pictures, as well as brought home copies of the menu and guide as well, in case anyone has questions. There's no doubt it's a big price disparity between doing the RM, and going by Amtrak. And indeed, most of the route is the same (the first about 90 minutes of...

    Rocky Mountaineer discussion

I just returned home (literally, a few hours ago), from taking the US route of the Rocky Mountaineer, the Rockies to Red Rocks, eastbound from Moab to Denver. I don't have the depth of knowledge about financial considerations and railroad operations as many of the others in this thread, and...

    Heartland Flyer discussion

Was back out in OKC a few days ago, and decided to have another go at it. This time I stayed at the Wyndham Grand (formerly the Renaissance), just adjacent to the the train station. I can recommend that hotel if you're looking for somwhere to stay nearby. Good service, clean room and common...

    Heartland Flyer discussion

True. I finished teaching a class as part of my trip to OKC, to a night shift. My plan had been to head to hotel, nap a couple hours, then relax on the train til Dallas, and catch a flight home. Ended up snagging an early flight from OKC instead, and on a layover as I type this. Missed trying...

Nevermind.. moments after I made that comment, it changed to cancelled on the Amtrak app.

    Heartland Flyer discussion

Sigh.. so much for my interesting side trip. Is the Amtrak site the best place to watch for updates, do you think? And if it does cancel, which seems likely, when do you think they'll announce that?

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train (Guadalajara/Jalisco, Mexico)

A few places in the Spanish speaking world call train cars "vagón (de tren)", so I suspect it's a artefact of that.

Jose Cuervo Tequila Train (Guadalajara/Jalisco, Mexico)

Aside from some passing mentions, I haven't seen any discussion of this tourist line come up here. Has anyone tried out the "Tequila Train" between Guadalajara and Jalisco? It's a short trip - you can do either train out and bus return, or bus out and train return, with the day focused on...

    Heartland Flyer discussion

That's a good point, but if it does, it does, I suppose. I'll be in OKC anyway and there are flight options home from there as well (that's actually what I originally had booked). Especially if it did cancel, I'd know pretty early in the day and could work around that.

Thanks for the info on seating - that seems just fine with me. Was just hoping to get a window seat, and I'll keep in mind to try for a right hand seat. I'm not super worried about getting the 3pm flight. I'm travelling carry on only, have Clear and PreCheck, and am generally pretty adept at...

    Heartland Flyer discussion

That seems like it could potentially work really well. There's a TRE departure from FTW Central at 12:52 PM, which seems like I'd have excellent chances of making from the Heartland Flyer. And the Medical/Market Center station is only about 4 miles from DAL. Not only that, at least the one...
