    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Old travelogue from the 1950's. I like the fresh trout that was served, and the Zephyrettes. The Cable Car lounge was, in some opinions, 2nd only to the Turquoise Room on the Super Chief.

    Amtrak Cascades Service discussion

Here is an interesting video on the history of passenger trains along the Pacific Northwest corridor, including the history of the development of the Amtrak Cascades. The video is a few years old, but still interesting.

The economics of budget airlines don't make sense

************************************************* I wonder if more airlines will drift away from the "hub" system and start flying from smaller cities to various destinations in rural areas. Here in Santa Rosa, a small, budget conscious airline called "Avelo" is shifting its base from Las Vegas...

    U.S./Canada border crossing discussion

******************************************************* I believe I took the Pacific International either in the late 1970's or early 1980's. I was on the Coast Starlight headed to Vancouver, BC. I think the train got into Seattle sometime around 8 PM, then a need to detrain and walk over and...

Should more small town & rural stations be built for Amtrak?

Dublin wants an Amtrak stops. Why giving one to it and other suburbs, town would be bad. I think one of the great benefits of Amtrak is the ability to board and detrain in small towns and cities. What if Amtrak long distance trains prevented stops in small towns? Could there be a compromise...

    Famous people with Railroad roots

A few more famous and not so famous people associated with trains and railroads: Father Albert Lacombe. Helped to create a peace agreement, 1882, between the Cree and Blackfoot nations which allowed the Canadian Pacific RR to progress further west. Lacombe, Alberta is a town named after him...

    Sacramento, CA

************************************* The Napa wine country is a little over an hour from Sacramento. If you have the time, the Napa Valley wine train is a lot of fun and has great, gourmet meals on board. The basic daytime run is around 3 hours on a trip to St. Helena and back. I have heard...

    Trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway

Here is an interesting account of a passenger who rode the Russian Trans-Siberian Railway, from Moscow to the Russian east coast, a 2 thousand mile trip. https://www.businessinsider.com/trans-siberian-railway-russia-what-its-like-photos-2019-7 The train went through 4 time zones. Russian no...

    Amtrak website issues

I just got through attempting to purchase a round trip ticket, on the Amtrak website, for a summer trip from Portland, Oregon to Whitefish, Montana. I put in the "from and to" information as well as a date. All I could get was a frozen screen. I hope they get the problem solved before my trip...

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

Here is a proposal for new and connecting routes in Alberta. https://canada.constructconnect.com/joc/news/infrastructure/2022/02/proposed-alberta-rail-network-could-create-links-across-province On the map, I don't see Calgary to Banff, only Calgary to Lake Louise, I assume there would be a...

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

Yes, an interesting post. Thanks. I keep hoping for an Edmonton to Calgary train to allow a loop from Vancouver-Kamloops-Edmonton-Calgary-Kamloops-Vancouver. A chance to ride both the VIA and Rocky Mountaineer on the same trip.

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

I've heard, for many years, that the VIA Canadian might be on the way out. It would be sad if that happened. The only Vancouver to Banff or Jasper train would then be the expensive Rocky Mountaineer. I wonder what impact a non-existent "Canadian" train would have on tourist dollars.

VIA Jasper, Prince George and Prince Rupert Service

I think that British Columbia could use a passenger train going north from Vancouver. A lot of interesting towns between N. Vancouver and Prince George. Squamish and Quesnel come to mind. A lot of beautiful country along the route. I don't think BC Rail will make a comeback. I took the "Royal...

Amtrak California extension to Reno possible?

There has been talk, for some time, for extending the Capitol Corridor route to Reno. But a number of problems with that idea. Weather issues, congestion, cost, and a possible need for double tracking among them.

Should more small town & rural stations be built for Amtrak?

At one time, the the Cascades trains had a TV monitor in a some of their cars. It displayed the route the train was on and it showed exactly where the train was, with depots and station stops displayed, and an estimated time of arrival for the next stop.

What will happen to Amtrak California when the HSR gets built?

https://is.gd/S3jynG The now estimated cost for Calif. High Speed Rail is $128 billion. When Calif. citizens voted for HSR, in 2008, it was going to cost $33 billion. From the above article: ****************************************** "Ardent supporters just as erroneously constantly point out...

Should more small town & rural stations be built for Amtrak?

********************************** I would like to see, on the Amtrak website, one-click station information with regard to location, how to get there, nearby streets, a photo of the station, etc. Also, whether or not it is a manned station and if it has baggage service. Maybe nearby cafes...
