    Riding Amtrak for fun?

I love to ride trains. I’d ride Amtrak just for the sake of riding a train and watching the world go by out a train window. I don’t do it anywhere near as much as I’ve always wanted to, and I’m scared I’m running out of time. I’ve told my family if they bury me I want my epitaph to be “All...

Typical consist of long distance Northeast Regionals

Not sure where to post this, but I’m sure admin will tell me where I should put it! What is the typical consist on some of the long distance northeast regionals such as Roanoke-Boston, Boston-Norfolk/Newport News? E.g., dining car or cafe only for eating? If it’s an overnighter are there...

Riding through Sunnyside yard and Hell Gate Bridge

Are there regular Amtrak or Metro North trains I could ride from either Penn Station or Grand Central that would let me see any of Sunnyside Yard and Hell Gate Bridge as I passed thru or over either one? I can read route maps but that isn’t an easy way in a congested area like this to know...

    Poughkeepsie, NY

Not sure which thread this goes in. I want to take a scenic day trip up the Hudson while in New York for a week next month. I’ve been advised riding up to Poughkeepsie and walking across the Hudson is worth the trip. My question now is how do I get TO the bridge from the train station? I’ve...

Scenic routes on LIRR to the far east end of Long Island?

I have a trip to NYC scheduled in November with a few free days when I can take scenic day train rides. I’ve never been anywhere on Long Island beyond Jamaica. Is either of the long routes to the east end of the island especially scenic? I love watching the world go by out a train window and...

Switching SB coaches to NB at Carbondale, Il

Just curious. Amtrak runs two trains a day each way btwn Chicago and Carbondale, IL. I’d bet each SB becomes the next NB, but I’m curious how they turn the coaches around. I see from openrailwaymap there’s a wye just north of the station. Does anyone know if they use that? I actually have...

    Business class seating on Palmetto

I’m confused by info I’ve seen on the Amtrak site and elsewhere about seating in business class on the Palmetto between Savannah and New York, etc. Is is it 2x1 or is it 2x2? The seating diagram I found on the Amtrak site is ambiguous, to me at least. Thx.

    Amtrak executives receive bonuses

Great news if you’re an Amtrak exec. Maybe not so much for the rest of us?

Short day trip along the Hudson River

I might have a chance to take a short trip along the Hudson River from New York City and back, just to watch the scenery and the river from a train window. I know, I know, it sounds silly but I like to do that sometimes. If I did it, how far from NYC would it make sense to ride and still...

Searching for rooms on a route with no particular departure date

This just occurred to me. I’ll keep looking on Amtrak.com but so far, I haven’t found an easy way to do it so I’ll ask here in case someone knows. I’d like to travel from Charlottesville to Chicago on the Cardinal in a roomette or bedroom. Not a coach seat. Sometime this summer. I don’t...

Amtrak auto train profit or loss

Mod: move this msg if necessary, I just watched yesterday’s auto train on a railfan camera and I was surprised at the size of it. There were 15 “people cars” and 34 “car cars”! It made me wonder: is this particular Amtrak “product” profitable for them or don’t they track costs and revenues...

    No Amtrak Alerts at Amtrak.com?

Since last night, I haven’t seen any service alerts at Amtrak.com. Other parts of the site seem in order, such as checking train status by number or station, but no alerts. I don’t (and won’t) tweet so I can’t (and won’t) look for them that way. Just curious…

Switching from one track gauge to another

I have no rail experience at all other than riding as a passenger. So I want to know how any railroad would accomplish something I read today about shipping weapons from Slovakia or Poland, etc., to Ukraine. Apparently the rails in Slovakia, Poland, and other Western European countries are a...

Canada coast to coast dream trip

I’ve got a fantasy trip I’d love to take, because Canada has always been one of my two favorite non-US countries. It’s only a fantasy, not even a “dream”, as I define those terms, because practically speaking there’s no chance it’ll ever happen, but I can still fantasize about it. I’d get to...

    Crescent operations and schedule performance

I may not have posted this in the right forum so I apologize in advance if it gets relocated. I apparently am not very good at that part of using this board. I watch the Crescent performance just for fun because it’s the first Amtrak train I’d take going anywhere. Is it my imagination that its...

Booking on AGR vs the app

I’m just curious. I don’t have many AGR points at all. I can’t travel any longer like I’ve wanted to all my life. But I’ve got one possible summer trip in mind. My meager points won’t help, but I’d still like to ask this Q. Is there any particular advantage or reason someone in my position...

    Tracking freight trains

I know almost nothing about the freight train industry. I barely know how to track Amtrak passenger trains online! Is there a way someone like me could find out online when freight trains are due to pass any particular station? Just asking…

    The railroad signals discussion

What am I doing right now? I’m sitting on the side of the Greenville, SC, station wishing I could ride a train! Anywhere! I don’t even care where! I told my family years ago if they bury me instead of cremate me, I want my epitaph to be All things considered, I’d rather be on a train. A...

Chicago-Boston on LSL with train change in Albany

I’ve never done the LSL from Chicago anywhere, so just out of curiosity I just searched the Amtrak schedules page for trains and found a couple choices. One is the LSL 448 all the way, and another choice the site offered seems to be the same train, with a “transfer” in Albany. But it also...

    Family Bedroom discussion

I think I can tell from the Amtrak description of the family bedroom but I’ll ask to be sure. Are there two full length adult size beds on the “ground floor” or would one full size adult need to be “upstairs”. At our ages, that’s a non-starter for us. Same for the regular bedroom, unfortunately.
