    Brightline Trains West!

This is mostly a big infomercial for Brightline West, but in the first few minutes, they mention that the FRA has determined that on the first 45 miles in the I-15 corridor, Brightline has demonstrated adequate solutions for any environmental concerns. If this is true, it is a major step, since...

Narrow escape from car hit by train

One time I took a one day "refresher" course in Drivers Education, as an option to avoid a fine for a traffic infraction. The instructor talking about railroad crossings said "Just remember - tie goes to the train".... He went on to relate to us that his father was a freight locomotive engineer...

    Southwest Chief discussion

That makes perfect sense - the previous day's SWC had been cancelled, so these folks opted to continue their trip a day later, and if they called Amtrak Customer relations they would have received compensation.

That make sense. Anyone else have thoughts/insights?

Status of Surfliner Service between Oceanside and Irvine

In spite of the landslide, Amtrak today was continuing the restoration of limited weekend service of the Surfliner in the affected area between Oceanside and San Juan Capistrano.

    Southwest Chief discussion

The person above answered the question. as how I knew they were SRO, but I still would like to know how this situation can come about when they have a reservation system.. do they intentionally overbook like the airlines?

    Southwest Chief discussion

This morning's #4(17) arrived in Kingman, AZ 2 hours behind it's normál 1.25am departure time. On the railcam, you could see a bunch of people boarding a coach car; having slept myself in coach on a number of occasions, those folks were looking to cozy into those cozy wide seats, complete with...

BNSF derailment (03/15/23) in AZ cancels SWC trains

Folks who aren't familiar with the topography of the desert area near the CA/AZ border, should understand that because its sand, it has almost zero capacity to absorb rainwater. And at many places on the highways you will see a dip in the road with a sign that says "xxxxxx Wash". These are...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Over the years, I have taken numerous trips on western LD trains, with either one or two nights in coach. I welcome the return of traditional dining for coach passengers. Saving money on coach always gave me enough in my budget to "splurge" for a meal or two in the dining car. As for the price...

    Amtrak delays

Yes, and in the case of the SWC - its not just the snow. Because the topography on the route from Barstow to Kingman is flat desert, the snow storms are accompanied by high winds, which creates a dangerous condition for top-heavy Superliners. The storms are affecting Northern California as well...

    Sunset Limited discussion

Yesterday's Sunset limited departed at 10pm from LAX= so apparently the 2.5 hour pad for track work is no longer needed. :)

    Sunset Limited discussion

Having had a few of those burritos in El Paso when #2 stopped there a while back, I can concur that the shorter stopping time in El Paso may jeopardize the high point of the stop! She's busy almost non-stop while the train is there! She is on the platform with coolers full of the best burritos...

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

I am traveling tomorrow on CZ 5(28) from Chicago to Sacramento. My friend and I are in a roomette in 0531, which from what I have read is a pretty "safe" sleeper as far as the risk of being downgraded to coach. Should I post my experiences from the trip elsewhere, either on a new thread or...

Superliner trains' removal and restoration of cars (2022-2023)

I am booked on the CZ in a roomette on August 28th, #5 from CHI-SAC. Fortnately, I am in 0531 the "base sleeper" for the CZ, so hopefully the reservation will not be downgraded. (Fingers crossed!)

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

Based on my reading of previous posts on the subject, Amtrak has a plan in place to bus folks that were on the 422, to catch the TE further north. As the previous poster mentioned, the 22 Eagle would have departed over 2 hours late, not just 20 minutes, since it takes time to attach the 422 cars...

Temporary service changes between ALB and SDY (July-August 2022)

Well, apparently there are no significant speed restrictions between ALB and SYD.. The LSL (8/1) arrived 3 minutes early in Chicago - a rare event on any day, much less with all the hoopla regarding the teetering building. So, it looks like smooth "railing" for the time being.

Temporary service changes between ALB and SDY (July-August 2022)

Looks like the LSL 49(31) successfully completed it's bus bridge in Albany. It departed from Schenectady over two hours late, but that makes sense - it many only be about 20 minutes from the two cities, but you have off load everyone from the train at Albany, put them and their luggage on to...

Amtrak long term service cancellations and restorations (2022-2023H1)

Per Amtrak, California Zephyr #5, departed 7/27, terminated in Denver due to maintenance in Moffat Tunnel. A 1005 Zephyr will continue on from Salt Lake City. I wonder what options passengers would have, and how much notice did they receive?

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

I believe your assumption is correct - When this train arrived at Fort Morgan Colorado, 301 was no longer on the train. Mike, who videos every arrival there, surmised that it was dropped off at Omaha or Lincoln, Nebraska. Another charger had been rumored to be dropped off for crew...

Thanks to Greylake Trains Youtube channel, ALC-42 #310 and 311 look to be on their way to Wilmington from the factory in Sacramento, courtesy of California Zephyr #6.
