    VIA Ocean discussion

This is from January 2024, so not too long ago: The food was a step down from The Canadian, but it was not bad. Certainly far better done Than Amtrak on the Eastern trains. I have kinda forgotten now, but I think the Breakfast poutine was rather good 😋

    VIA Northern Quebec Service

That probably explains why there was no food stored in my Jonquière bound coach from Montreal to Hervey-Jonction. The VIA attendant mentioned he had to go to the Senneterre car to get items. At Hervey-Jonction he set up a coffee urn and I assume brought a cart of food over (but I did not...

I think the second law of public transport is new seats are always less comfortable than what they replace 🙂

fdaley - How was traffic? I had originally considered driving up that way from NJ but figured the traffic might be a problem. I ended up going to Montreal and am actually sitting at the border right now on the Adirondack coming home. It was a phenomenal show in Montreal… glad I did it.

    VIA Northern Quebec Service

The train is just a baggage car and one coach car with a small area at one end for the service items. There is no area with tables, so just eat at your seat.

    VIA Northern Quebec Service

They had fairly good coffee, so that’s important. I had a bagel and cream cheese, but it was pretty sorry compared to the delicious ones on offer in Montreal. I’ll post a photo of the menu, but I am taking the bus as I write this to Quebec City (so can’t comment on the return journey) and the...

    VIA Northern Quebec Service

I happened to see the VIA crew at the Delta Hotel Saguenay this morning. I’ll bet VIA’s bill from the Delta is more than they collected in ticket revenue yesterday 😲

    VIA Northern Quebec Service

I took the Jonquière train today as an add on to my trip to Montreal to see the eclipse (was spectacular in Montreal). I was pleasantly surprised. Very scenic trip through the mountains. Mid April is likely low season as there was only a 1/2 dozen other passengers on the train. Only 3 of us...

Amtrak Solar Eclipse viewing April 8 2024

Saw it today from Montreal. Had planned to take the Adirondack up here, but was sold out by the time I pull the trigger (only Friday). But I will take the Adirondack home after a little add on excursion to Jonquière on VIA Wednesday.

I took The Ocean in January and the biggest issue I found with the Renaissance bedroom is that the beds are very narrow.

14 day JR Rail pass trip (Japan March 2024)

Today’s highlight (March 14th) will be the SL Hitoyoshi https://www.jrkyushu.co.jp/english/train/sl.html Unfortunately this locomotive will be retired at the end of this month 🙁 The day started with a visit to the Onsen (hot spring bath) at the Hotel Okura followed by their breakfast buffet...

14 day JR Rail pass trip (Japan March 2024)

Today March 13th was another fine day of train rides. I have included my itinerary further down in this individual post. The weather was also nice today. Cool, but mostly sunny. The day started out in Hiroshima Station seeing a series 500 Shinkansen. These are getting old now and are only...

14 day JR Rail pass trip (Japan March 2024)

Just learned that you can only have 10 attachments, so I’m going to have to go out of sequence here. BTW I also learned you can’t bold anything which seemed odd as the rules page has Bolded headings in it! March 10th continued: Took this limited express back to Matsuyama from Iyo Ozu. It...

14 day JR Rail pass trip (Japan March 2024)

March 10: Iyonada Monogatari at Matsuyama Station (Shikoku) This train is very popular and tends to run only on weekends and holidays. I believe you can purchase a green seat on this train (meaning free if you have JR Green pass) at a ticket window in Japan at 30 prior to your journey...

14 day JR Rail pass trip (Japan March 2024)

Thought I’d start a thread on my 14 day JR pass trip. I started the train portion of the trip on Sunday March 10th. Just to be thorough the trip so far: March 3rd: New Jersey Transit Gladstone branch with change of train at Summit, NJ and continuing into Penn Station NYC. Switch to the LIRR...
