    Texas HSR

Just like the first time in 1990, Southwest Airlines successfully lobbied again against this project and it's DEAD. Southwest airlines made sure it didn't happen.

    Sunset Limited discussion

I'm the most frequent rider on the Sunset Limited, making 10 round trips anualy from HOS to LAX in the sleeper. Unfortunaly, this year (2023) is going to be horribly hard to get reservations, because the host railroad (UP) charges Amtrak by how many cars the carry in the consist. Also, we are...

All that sounds prettly, doesn't it. But, in reality, it just don't happen that way.

    Sunset Limited discussion

I travel Amtrak's Sunset Limited about 10 round trips a year between Houston and LAX. I carry a scanner with me, and understand railroading. I've visited the Harriman Dispatching Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Believe it or not, UP DOES give the Sunset Limited priority and does their best. Most...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Keep in mind that right now, Amtrak is still in "Covid" mode. They are still not letting coach passengers eat in the dining car and other cutbacks are still in effect. Amtrak was unable to cash in on the high gas prices, because of being stuck in "Covid" mode. I'm the most frequent traveler on...

    Sleeper accommodation discussion

I'm a regular sleeping car passenger on the Sunset Limited and have the same problem. Right now, Amtrak is still in the Covid mode, they took off cars due to fall in ridership and even though now, ridership is almost back to normal, they are still in Covid mode. They save money by taking off...

    Sunset Limited discussion

They inspect the train and that takes about 45 minutes. Also the 2 cars off the Texas Eagle are attached to train #1 and detached from train #2 as they are the Texas Eagle portion. The Sunset Limited, in reality runs as 2 trains between LAX and San Antonio. It is in reality the Sunset...

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

When the train leaves LAX, it is in reality 2 trains (the Sunset Limited (train#2 and the Texas Eagle (train 422) and when the train gets to San Antonio, the last 2 cars of the train are cut off and reconnected to train 22 to continue on north of San Antonio and all the way to Chicago. The...

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

You know, I went though a lot of times with Amtrak and still am one of their most frequent passengers. having 900,00 miles in, I have to say that the number one thing that affected me the most, though late trains, a few buses due to late trains (but not many buses), it slowed my down in life...

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

yes, sometimes the Eagle is held and sometimes it's not, but there will be buses at San Antonio to take the passengers to their final destination. People going north of Longview, Tx will be buses to Longview to catch up with the train. The train will WAIT in Longview for all the passengers going...

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

don't worry, you can stay in the same room. This happens all the time to me. Your porter (attendent) will just keep you in the same room all the way to Longview. He (she) will take care of all the details.

Boarding/alighting from a car different from the car one is assigned to

As long as the employee in charge of the car knows who you are, it should be no problem. The employee of any particular car is responsible for who comes in and is responsible to keep out people that he or she doesn't recognize.

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

Don't worry, this happens to me all the time. The attendant (porter) will understand your situation and just keep you in the same room. In case 422 arrives late into San Antonio, there will be a bus to take you to Longview. So don't worry, enjoy your trip.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

The Texas Eagle is unfortunately one of those trains in which the crew determines the procedure for that particular day and they do it to comfort themselves, not the passengers. The train is staffed out of Chicago. The Chicago crew base is well known for their laziness and rudeness.

Superliner seats - ease of access from window seat to aisle?

There is plenty of leg space in these Superliner cars, unlike buses or airplanes, so it's very easy to step over your seat mate's legs and get out to the aisle

    What should Amtrak change?

I make about 10 round trips a year from Houston to LAX on Sunset Limited and prices can go up or down 10-20% based on season and availability. The big problem is Amtrak won't put on extra car(s) during high peak travel season. The freight railroad, who owns the tracks, charges Amtrak per CAR, so...

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

keep in mind also, that the portion of the trip (Coast Starlight) along the ocean between San Luis Obispo, is one of the most scenic routes on the entire Amtrak system. When passengers are routed from Sacramento to Lax on the San Joaquin line, they missed this part of the trip and some are very...

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

There's too many southbound passengers on the Coast Starlight that like to connect to the Sunset Limited. An earlier departure time of train #2/22 would break that connection. This connection has been a part of Amtrak since the beginning and I don't think it's a good idea to break it. I think a...

Handling of misconnect from Sunset Limited to Texas Eagle at San Antonio

It's a big problem on this route. They used to hold #22 until the train #2/22 arrived at SAS. But lately, they have not been doing that. I think that the answer would be to make #22 leave SAS at 8AM or 9AM. (Change the schedule) as 7 AM is too early anyway in my opinion. Even now, leaving at...
