Chicago Union Station track rearrangement plans

I’ve heard similar but they always seem to place more emphasis on the single level Midwest trains. Likely the LSL/Cardinal would use them too.

Chicago Union Station track rearrangement plans

The grant for the mail platforms doesn’t even mention Metra. There’s two grants awarded, both included platform modifications. The baggage platforms will be modified for Metra use while the Mail platforms are for Amtrak Midwest trains. Rebuilding the Mail platforms to low level is just...

Chicago Union Station track rearrangement plans

The Mail platforms are high level thus Metra can’t utilize them yet. That and BNSF trains would have to cross over the Amtrak tracks in order to access them. The reactivated Mail platforms likely will be used by the corridor trains using single level equipment.

    Amtrak FY25 Grant Request

Amtrak also requested 250 million for CHIP, unclear though on which subproject this would fund. Also revealed is the total cost which has somehow jumped to 3 billion.

Chicago Metra Electric District (MED) speed increases?

Metra has been adding new substations along the line for the past few years. I imagine that would at least partially suffice for power needs.

St. Paul, Milwaukee, Chicago (TCMC) second daily service

Brightline has mentioned Midwest corridors in the past but they want to be the exclusive operator of those trains. Notably they mentioned the Chicago-St Louis route, probably because the public paid for all the upgrades.

CUS does have a decently sized concourse though for passengers to wait. Currently it’s being renovated to update the waiting areas and improve flow.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion

Bilevel equipment to replace current Superliners only correct? They aren’t designed a NEC capable bilevel are they?

The Great River Rail Commission was throwing a fit over Amtrak trying to copyrighting the name “Great River” so that’s probably why the name was changed.

A Twitter user involved in Minnesota transit advocacy spoke with Erik Rudeen of MNDOT, the train is expected to start this spring. The dates haven’t been released.

    Amtrak Siemens Charger locomotive (SC44, ALC42, ALC42E)

Long distance Charger reliability improved significantly this year.

What will happen to Amtrak California when the HSR gets built?

This would be a good move if we weren’t talking about California. The state government is mostly incompetent when it comes to anything transit related. Not to mention the current governor is aloof when it comes to public transport.

Letters sent to Senators and IDOT regarding Amtrak cancellations.

Amtrak is currently engaged in section 106 in relation to the structure. I think it’s beautiful structure but with no actual access to the rest of the city it’s pointless and should be demolished. Anything that actually helps Amtrak improve their network brings more societal good.

Letters sent to Senators and IDOT regarding Amtrak cancellations.

So far it looks like UP isn’t willing to sell it for a reasonable price, that’s supposedly why Amtrak didn’t get their full ask from this years Fed/State partnership. Durbin claims he’s working with Sec Buttigieg to resolve the dispute, take that for what it’s worth.

E and F unit locomotives today

How is this not a streamlined locomotive? It may not be to your personal liking but it’s plenty streamlined.

    Chicago Union Station discussion

Yes the yards last daily intermodal train was switched to Global 2 at least 4 years ago. With global 1 operations ending there’s almost no chance UP will ever use the yard again.

    Chicago Union Station discussion

They could but the ramp isn’t on their property, that’s the only aspect of the project that would affect BNSF.
