    Train Legs vs. Sea Legs.

I haven't experienced Train Legs" until my most recent trip on the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle. It took a few hours to return to normal. My first long distance ride was from Elko to Pittsburgh in 2008. I had no problem then. I've been on several trips since 2008 The Crescent and...

Coast Starlight (better scenery NB or SB?)

We want to take a trip on the Starlight. Is the scenery better going from south to north or the other way around. I am trying to determine the best viewing time along the coast.(I’m glad everyone understood my meaning, obviously the scenery is the same either way it’s just darker one way!)

How does the Adirondack enter New York City

I rode the Adirondack from Montreal to New York's Penn Station last week (one week before the leaves changed they say). Can someone tell me the route the train follows once it reaches Manhattan? If you can refer to a map that would be appreciated. By the time we reached Yonkers it was dark so I...

    Accurate Maps of Amtrak Routes

Are there any maps available on the web that accurately depict the routes. I'm trying to trace the route from Pittsburgh, PA to Washington D.C. I know the route follows the river valleys for the most part but I seem to get lost around Meyersdale, PA. Anybody have a suggestion on how to do this...

    What are these vehicles?

Thanks, by the way they all seemed to have unique horns to match each vehicle, and the operators looked as if they were having a great time.

In 2008 my wife and I took the California Zephyr from Elko, Nevada and continued home to Pittsburgh via the Capitol Limited. W boarded the CZ at 9 PM and after a quick walk through we returned to our roomette. Both of us have not been on a train since at least 50 years ago and did not really...

Pictures 2008 trip from Elko to Pittsburgh

Given the fact that I was trying to enjoy the ride I wasn't concerned with the picture quality. If memory serves me correctly, my roomette was on the opposite side of the train anyway, someday I'll invest in some filters too!

Pictures 2008 trip from Elko to Pittsburgh

I posted some of the photos of the ride between Salt Lake City and Denver on Photobucket. Since I'm just getting a handle on how Photobucket works, bear with me. As far as I'm concerned this ride is a must, someday I want to take it in the winter. SDUnger/2008 trip on the California Zephyr

Thanks for the instructions on how to add the photos, here are my pictures of the Elko Station. Both were taken last year. However I went by the station again 2 weeks ago and there is no change. My wife and I moved our daughter to Elko last year and I suggested we return by train. Both of us...

I have a somewhat recent photo of the Elko "Station" however I do not know how to place it into this reply. The best way I can describe the station is it is just like the stations along the Pittsburgh trolley line of the 1990's. If someone would give me the instructions on how to paste the photo...

"I coulda been a contenda stations!!

Boy do I agree with the refurbishment of the Pittsburgh Station (PGH). I took the Pennsylvanian to New York last Christmas. And stopped in Philadelphia. Though the track area in all stations look dirty and unkempt the Philadelphia station was such a pleasant surprise when I went up the stairs...

    California Zephry Train Speed

I believe I80 is posted at 75MPH, I was just riding along as I passed the train. I guess I'm just perplexed that our country's rail system is not designed to handle 100+ mph. Thanks for all the replies. Next time I'll try to spell Zephyr correctly too.

    California Zephry Train Speed

Perhaps someone could explain to me why while I was traveling on I80 in Nevada where the railroad tracks run somewhat parallel to the highway I can go 80 MPH and pass the California Zephyr. I took the California Zephyr last year and liked the ride, especially the ride from Salt Lake to Denver...
