Most interesting encounter(s) on a train

On my trip this past September I met two women in the Metropolitan Lounge in Chicago as we responded to our train announcement. We rode the valet cart to our train together, then discovered our roomettes were across the hall from each other. They had flown to the US from The Netherlands, toured...

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

Reading that was a shock to my system. Fairfield Inn out here in Ohio was the lowest price Marriot offering, and I remember paying around $60 a night!

Ohio finally starts the process for new Amtrak service

Ohio definitely needs a 3C plan, but I think there needs to be a plan for more direct routes to Toledo and Detroit, hopefully with service to DTW as well. Toledo has lost airline service, necessitating a long drive to Detroit. An inter-urban type service there would probably attractive...

States move toward user based road tax

Good luck doing that at or near the Ohio/Ky border at the Brent Spence Bridge in Cincinnati!

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

Thanks for correcting me, Bob. As a first timer arriving late at night, a 74 yr old single woman, I didn’t see anything nearby. As I had a reservation already, I was focused on getting there.

    Hotels convenient to Amtrak

The San Antonio station is within sight of several hotels, but you can’t walk there. arriving about 10 pm, the station personnel were kind enough to call a cab. BTW, there is also no public parking nearby, so when my relatives dropped me off on return trip, they couldn’t stick around. Also...

States move toward user based road tax

Ohio adds a $100/yr surcharge on hybrid car registrations, and a $200 surcharge for EVs. A regressive tax that doesn’t reflect my mileage at all.

Atlas Obscura and the Great Migration, by Rail

Thanks, everyone for all this information. I’m reading the Warmth of other Sons for a class I’m taking, and the author states that at it’s highest point, 10,000 African Americans entered Chicago in a month. I was wondering how the RRs handled all the traffic. And how Chicago and it’s people deal...

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

On both to and fro, the attendants were Ok with the early set up. One asked that I let him unmake the bed about 2 hours out from the station as it was the terminus and there were lots of things to be done. On the return trip I think the suspension system on our car was worn out, awful lurching...

    Amtrak features and comfort updates

On my trips in a roomette, I found I was more comfortable with the bed made up all the time. I used my airline carry-on sized bag as a back rest support (with the pillows) during the day. I’m short, so there was room for my cpap on the bed. I carried a power strip which provided more outlets for...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

I also had these same considerations when planning my last trip. Driving alone is a tough proposition for me, and I get drowsy driving long distances. While not ideal and expensive, the train was the most comfortable.

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

Sorry for the confusion About Flixtrain. I can’t find the website I used. But if you notice on the website I just posted, low prices are there, plus multiple trains each day, (only one per day on my Chi-> Sandusky trip.)

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

To say nothing of how deeply the US government subsidizes gasoline prices.

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

By comparison: Gasoline —Toledo $3.59 per gallon Stockholm — $7.22 after conversion The US trip takes a little more time on the train than the auto. The Sweden train trip takes about half as much time as the auto. Why doesn’t the US want to do better at this game? On my Texas trip, there...

Cost of taking trains vs cost of taking other modes in the U.S.

    I just did a little figuring. Gothenburg —> Stockholm ~ 300 mi Flix X2000 2 hr 58 min 185 SEK = $17.43 US 1st class, free wifi Chicago —> Sandusky OH ~290 miles 5 — 5.5 hours $36 — $58 coach

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Smart idea. I thought instantly of a great deli, like Corky and Lenny’s in Cleveland. That would be a great business on a train! Something with variety, hot and cold foods, soups, bread, deserts, yum!

    Booking online on Amtrak website

The former website was indeed easier to use, but as a newcomer, also obscure. it was harder, I think, to find out where the train actually stopped. Even now, when ”nothing is available” comes back I don’t know why it’s not available, Since I’ve not learned what days certain routes are active...
