    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

Today (March 23) #5 got to Grand Junction over 2 hours late with a single locomotive. It left town with a UP SD70M.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

Stadler has more land in Salt Lake City than Siemens has in Florin. They'd just need to build the facilities to produce steel carbodies and expand assembly space.

    Salt Lake City Station discussion

In the last several months us Rio Grande Plan folks have begun hosting a monthly coffee hour. Dates and info can be found on our Linkedin or Instagram page. Today I witnessed two cyclists risking their lives cutting in front of an oncoming Frontrunner train. This crossing would be eliminated...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

Anybody who has made passenger rail equipment in the US in the last 15 years is likely to at least try to bid. Amtrak mentioned last year that they had ~10 companies interested. Of those you can be pretty sure the following are going to make a significant effort: Stadler Siemens Alsom CAF...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

I am glad I shared the documents. It seems you bunch are much faster at reading through and finding the good bits than I am. I will quote the links to keep them on what is presently the front page. This might be my favorite bit:

Fine, It's on you two if the feds get pissed. No, though diagrams and images are messed up because it has been scanned from a physical copy. Main Document (Download link) Further Chapters (Download link)

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement RFP discussion 2024 H1

Well after several technical issues with the Amtrak FOIA process I am now in possession of the Technical Specification chapter of the LD RFP. I'm cautious to share the entire document as every page has a bold "CONFIDENTIAL - DO NOT DISTRIBUTE" printed at the bottom. I'll go through it more...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

The wording of the pre-procurement RFP: It is not suggesting that they are looking to replace bi-level equipment, rather they are looking to purchase bi-level. My request for the full document is still pending, though it's apparently several thousand pages and very detailed. Odd considering...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Bilevels allow certain features like ADA Bathrooms and Kitchens to occupy the entire car width on the lower level. Lifts are a relatively easy thing to maintain. And the RFP was worded to specify that they were purchasing bilevels, not just replacing them.

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

The only thing that is known is that Amtrak is looking to purchase bilevel equipment. Single-level was ruled out in the RFP. Otherwise we'll continue to speculate and argue for at least the next several months. It'll be late this year at the soonest before a preferred vendor is chosen and...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Stainless Steel Single Levels won't happen because Amtrak is buying bilevel equipment. It was very clearly stated in the initial RFP. They did not specify stainless steel, though that is almost certainly what they are after.

FRA's Corridor ID Program and possible new Corridors

More info on the rejection: Utah Senate president ‘disappointed’ in Idaho flub that derailed Salt Lake-Boise train study Sounds like the Salt Lake City - Vegas route was probably submitted correctly and was likely denied for another reason, UDOT will be meeting with the FRA soon to find out...

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Amtrak will certainly take their time procuring LD equipment. I went back and reviewed the history of the Airo order. Here's a quick recap as I understand it: June 2018: Amtrak releases RFI for single-level replacement trainsets. January 2019: Amtrak releases an RFP for trainsets. April...

FRA's Corridor ID Program and possible new Corridors

Report: Federal government never received Salt Lake City-Boise rail application KPCW | By Parker Malatesta Published February 1, 2024 at 4:48 PM MST I am a whole new type of mad at the moment.

    California Zephyr discussion 2023 Q4 - 2024

The lead engine was a P40. I don't see a world where they repair it.
  19. Paniolo Man

Long Distance (LD) fleet replacement discussion (2022 - 2024Q1)

Their "2 stage" RFP was intentionally crafted to keep it out of the public eye. The only entities that know specifics are Amtrak, and worthy bidders. We only know that Amtrak is looking to procure a large number of bilevel long-distance cars. For a better answer, submit a FOIA request, they'll...
