New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

Amtrak's proposed schedule for the two daily round trips was posted on AU a while back, possibly two or three years or longer ago. Maybe not even this thread, though I doubt it. Does anyone remember where?

New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

Local news reported that the previous Mobile mayor and council approved and committed to this service. The previous mayor and one councilman were replaced in the last election. The new mayor and councilman have effectively reneged on the previous action by not approving land acquisition of the...

New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

Thirty plus years ago, the last Amtrak NOLA/Mobile train started in August with two coaches. By Christmas ridership was so high that it needed five coaches. Then CSX shut down the line between Christmas and New Year's with no prior public announcement to repair the Rigolets bridge. Amtrak...

The Trains News Wire editorial was written on Thursday, 2/15/2024, after the STB meeting. Bill Stephens is a respected long-time columnist with Trains magazine. If you read the article you realize the recommendation to "bail" is to prevent Amtrak oppositionists from using this failing proposal...

New Cancellation Policy at Amtrak (August 2023)

The cancellation policy changed as of 10/24/2023. Now, if cancelled more than 24 hours after purchase, a 25% cancellation fee will be charged. In other words, if you used your credit card, you will receive only 75% of the original debit back to your credit card.

Amtrak Dining and Cafe service 2023 H2

I have ridden LD trains since 1945 (age 10) and Amtrak LD trains since May, 1971 until 5 months ago, my last, possibly final, trip. The diner service and menus always were exceptional until "Covid" when the world changed for some reason. Flex meals are an abomination to someone paying extra for...

New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

What arrangements are being made to compensate for the loss of the 1800' storage siding used for two previous NOL/MOB Amtrak trains that CSX tore up, unannounced, in 2018? Curious that the tear-up was done less than two years after the Amtrak/Thad Cochran Coast PR train in 2016. Kinda Smelly

I agree with the comment about NS being gun-shy because of Palestine, OH. Neither the CN CONO route through Mississippi nor the UP Sunset route through Texas have modified their ATK schedules. Both these routes are experiencing the same temps as the NS Crescent route in Mississippi. Oh well.

The high air temps between Meridian and NOL have been averaging 100*F for the past 3+/- weeks with no clouds, let alone rain to cool things. The low temp rarely got below 80*F. That's a challenge for CWR (Continuously Welded Rail) that also must sustain lows near zero in winter. That's 100*F of...

Please understand that this situation exists only on trains east of the Mississippi. The trains originating in Chicago and New Orleans traveling to west coast destinations are given first-class service. This includes full menu diner meals served with wine by gracious servers, observation cars...

The May 15/16 #19 did not have a diner. The SCA told me that sleeper pax could use the café car as a lounge. However, when I got there, the sleeper end was all taken up by crew. They told me that I could use the coach end as a lounge. Unfortunately, it was filled by coach pax eating their café...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Yes, for the lunch and dinner meals I expect better than unappetizing when paying first-class fare, so I am "picky". However, there was no excuse for the breakfasts. I assume those meals were produced correctly by the catering kitchen. My assumption is that the snack car attendant did not follow...

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Rode 19 and 20 (Crescent) this past weekend. The flex meals were reasonable, tasteless, tough, or inedible. Pancakes were inedible for one half of each, and barely chewable for the other half. The inedible half could not be cut by either teeth or knife. The barely chewable side required lots of...

New Gulf Coast Amtrak service (New Orleans - Mobile and Baton Rouge)

Tried to book from Gulfport (GPT) to NOL various dates to early October, no joy. I assume management hasn't decided on a start date. So won't allow the potential schedule to be accessed. I guess the passenger speed signaling and track upgrades are still in process. Haven't heard if the...

A friend sent me a photo of ATK diner 68022 on #20 leaving NOL today. I hope this is for real. I'll be on #20 this coming Thursday, 5/11. My prayers for diner menu meals, especially "Dinner In The Diner", with apologies to the writers and performers of Chattanooga Choo-Choo.

    Amtrak dining and cafe service

Please expand on this statement, and your information source. I'm reserved on the Crescent 5/11 and 5/15. I would love to think that I might have a seat in a diner with table mates, as I enjoyed for 35 years, until Flex.

The comments about abiding by local liquor laws reminds me of the ultimate absurdity, When flying from Atlanta to Los Angeles in the early 1960's, all aisle beverage carts with liquor aboard had to be removed from the aisle, stowed and locked before we crossed above the Oklahoma state line while...
