Upgrade on trip purchased with points

I've got tickets for nyp-nhv coach tomorrow, purchased with points. I can't find a way to use my upgrade coupon. I'm assuming that's because you can't use two kinds of rewards on the same trip. Is that correct? Can't even bid up, or so it tells me.

    Select plus for lounge pass

We did tons of coast to coast train travel in sleeper cars over the past two years, and while I have Select Plus status, my husband does not. I can access Lounge access in the app which shows my Select Plus status, but he cannot. We've been longing to see the Moynihan lounge and finally will be...

    SPG to Bradley airport

On Saturday, Dec 3, late afternoon, we have to get from the Springfield train station to Bradley International airport. On weekdays you can get a bus from Windsor Locks station to the airport. But on Saturdays that bus service isn't available. We can do Lyft for that part. But what I'm wondering...

    Luggage storage PHL Metropolitan

We'll finally use our GR passes tomorrow to hang in the Metropolitan lounge in the 30th Street station, Philadelphia, waiting for the NER. Is there luggage storage included there as there is in Chicago?

    Are these good rooms?

In mid-December we're taking the Empire Builder Seattle to Chicago car 830 room 6. And the LSL car 4820 room 1. Is there anything seriously wrong with either of these rooms?

Using AGR certificate to upgrade on NER+Valley Flyer trip

Hubby and I will be taking the Valley Flyer Springfield to New Haven, changing to Northeast Regional to go to Philadelphia. I want to use some points to upgrade to business class, but it appears the Valley Flyer has no business class. Is it true that I can't do this upgrade until 12 hours before...

    Amtrak to SEPTA?

Just bought tickets to go to Philadelphia and discovered on the ticket this: "FREE SEPTA TRANSFER: This ticket is valid for free travel on SEPTA Regional Rail trains between 30th Street, Suburban Station and Jefferson Station." What does that actually mean? I can only go to those specific...

Can't a senior purchase for self and adult?

I tried in the app and the website to purchase tickets SEA-SPG for myself and hubby. At the moment and for another year, I'll be a "senior" while he is still an "adult". When you indicate that one is an adult and one is a senior, there is no option to say who is what. When it came time to put in...

    Can't book on coast starlight?

I've used the app and the website to try to book a trip from Emeryville to Portland OR but it keeps saying "we do not have any travel options between the stations entered." Any idea why?

Question about missed connection in Chicago

The CZ is by now seven hours late. It may or likely may not get us into Chicago in time to catch the 9:30 LSL. And the only other train that would take us home is the same LSL tomorrow, getting us home too late for a gig. A) is it true the LSL would not be held for all the passengers needing to...

How long can you sleep in a roomette?

Several times I've purchased a roomette for day-long travel so I could get some much-needed sleep and never had any problem with that. In the past six months we've gone SPG-EMY round trip twice, enjoying the ability to nap during the day since sleeping on a train doesn't give us the greatest...

    Virtual Railfans

Wanting to see the conditions at the Flagstaff station, I found a webcam at Virtual Railfans. Someone in the live chat was excited to be chatting with a passenger and asked that I do a robot dance. Hubby Dave was glad to oblige:

    Great experiences in stations

We spend varying amounts of time in train stations. What's the most memorable thing you've seen, had happen, or made happen in a train station? Hubby (guitarist) and I (vocals) are semi-professional musicians doing flamenco or, more often, vintage vocals in several languages. Once when the old...

    Northampton to Montreal?

I'm imagining a trip from Northampton, MA, to Essex Junction, VT. Local bus into Burlington where we eat well and possibly spend the night. Ferry to seasonal station at Port Kent, NY, which I'm sure was closed down the past two years. Stay at an Airbnb there, then from Port Kent to Montreal. But...

    Superliner upper bunk

I love sleeping, napping, reading, and looking out the window in the upper bunk of the Viewliner. I'm agile and moderately strong so getting into and out of it is a breeze. The placement of light and wall pocket are correct: at the far end from where you climb in. The Superliner upper bunk is...

    Planning southwest trip

We're thinking of going to San Francisco from Chicago by way of Santa Fe, Flagstaff, Grand Canyon, and Los Angeles, spending a night or two in each place. We love to walk and don't want to rent a car. How does one get from Lamy to Santa Fe? How is the weather likely to be in Santa Fe and...

    Superliner roomette space, views

I've booked a RT California Zephyr trip for hubby and me in a roomette. We've done the Viewliner roomette so we pretty much know what we're getting into. However, I'd love to know the exact dimensions of the closet, as he's considering getting some sort of travel guitar. Or he'll want to have...

How far do seats recline in roomettes?

I'm beginning to figure out how to put together a multi-stop cross-country trip, complete with sleeping accommodations. I've looked at the virtual tours of the Viewliner roomettes, but cannot for the life of me see how the seats recline. They seem to have their backs up against a wall and not a...

    New member from Syracuse

There are certain things you just have to do before your time is up on this earthly sphere, and taking a cross-country trip on trains, complete with sleeping accommodations, is one of them. Back in the '70's I did Amtrak from New York to Florida to Chicago to LA to San Francisco.... all in...
