New Rail Operator London to Paris?

A second operator would be good. Competition helps keep fares lower, usually.

    Saudi Airlines?

Sneaking alcohol onboard? You're joking, right?

    Southwest Chief derailment (June 2022)

This incident is an absolute tragedy on all sides. I have property on top of Rowe Mesa, in New Mexico. To get to or from anywhere I have to cross the SWC tracks that intersect NM Hwy 34, at the bottom of the mesa and adjacent to I-25. There are lights and arms at this crossing. Regardless, no...

    Amtrak long distance fares 2021-2023

I've been on here for quite a while but haven't visited in some time. Can someone point me to "Niemi24's chart," please. My trips are in a roomette, usually ABQ-LAX and back.

    Election results and Amtrak

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if the Biden/Harris family and team charter a train for the trip from Wilmington to D.C. the day before or day of the inauguration. It's possible that a vintage carriage with a platform at the rear is being fitted with a bulletproof bubble. I would love to watch...

    The Grand Canyon

I enjoyed your report and pics. Note the spelling of Mary Jane Colter, not Coulter. Sorry, former teacher here... Your description of where you dined in Williams is helpful. Pics of the parlor car are wonderful, looks like the place to be on the GCR. Thanks again.

Pre-Boarding for disabled for Surfliner at San Diego?

Thank you, Seat 38A, you've answered my question. I've boarded at Santa Fe Station, alone, before but don't remember seeing any elderly or disabled passengers or a special seating area. Your information sets my mind at ease. As I mentioned, my husband's service dog LOVES riding in electric...

Pre-Boarding for disabled for Surfliner at San Diego?

My husband is disabled and recently acquired a service dog to help him with stability while walking and standing. We flew home with her (2 flights of 2 hours each and we changed planes at a very busy airport). The dog did very well on the flights and loved riding the airport electric cart. On...

Winter respiratory illnesses: train vs plane

In the winter I wear a face mask when traveling, the super-duper antibacterial paper ones. I find it does help a lot (I have asthma and am prone to respiratory issues). The nice thing about the mask is lots of people assume I'm the one who's sick and they stay away. That's plenty OK by me.

Questions (Amtrak vs Greyhound, DEN to ORL)?

I hope you really enjoy your trip. I would purchase blanket, pillow, etc. before you travel because I would want to wash the blanket at home before travel. You will be able to be with your husband throughout the trip. If there isn't a seat open next to him discuss it with a conductor and it will...

SoCal to NorCal; most direct route?

Wise decision to postpone your trip due to the many fires. On your original question, I would avoid any bus even if it is faster. I detest long bus rides and will NOT do them. My daughter lives in San Clemente. I fly into San Diego (non-stops available from my nearest airport) and take the...

    Share a Coke with...Amtrak

I didn't read the entire thread, so apologize if this has been covered. I don't like Pepsi, so I'm glad to hear about the switch. I'm wary of the "new dining," it sounds unhealthy and yucky. What I've always done when riding in a sleeper is bring an eBags Crew Cooler. I pack several Diet Dr...

    America's coolest train stations?

I don't think anyone has mentioned San Clemente Pier, which is just an open platform right ON the beach. This is the station I use when visiting my daughter in San Clements, it's truly unique and only 2 Pacific Surfliners per day stop there. The next station north is San Juan Capistrano and...

Did I get a bad room?

When I get a room I don't want, I phone to change it. I mainly ride the 2-level Superliner trains and like a downstairs room. I've always been able to get one when phoning in. I'm with you, I wouldn't want a room right by the coffee station and shower. Make a call and see if you can change it. I...

New Member Info Requested (re Santa Fe, NM)

I live near Santa Fe and Lamy. The railroad wasn't built right into Santa Fe due to a political feud at the time, it was "punishment" to the local Santa Fe politician. Regarding the Harvey Houses, the three with which I'm most familiar are Winslow, Santa Fe, and Las Vegas. La Fonda in Santa Fe...

Luggage storage in LA Union Station?

Thank you, pennyk, for your reply. I'm hoping that's the case for my arrival. I appreciate your response.

Luggage storage in LA Union Station?

I'll be traveling business class on the Surfliner in a couple of weeks, from San Juan Capistrano to LAX. My onward travel is at the airport, so I would like to leave my luggage at the lounge while I walk around and visit Olvera Street. Is this allowed, since I'm arriving and not departing?

    No Id

If you're moving back home you should have your important documents with you on the train. The SS card and birth certificate are certainly adequate, as mentioned here. When I travel I take photocopies of important information and documents. Since you're permanently moving, use the originals but...

    Alan Burden (AlanB)

Alan was the heart and soul of these forums. He was so so kind to me 7+ years ago when I first joined. I was going to take the SWC and connectors from Lamy NM to NYC and then Quantico VA. I had many questions about traveling in a roomette, the dining car, etc. He was so helpful. This community...

    First time in a sleeper

Be sure to take 1-2 packets of Clorox wipes. I'm always astonished at how filthy the tray tables and other hard surfaces are in both coach seats and roomettes. It usually takes a minimum of 2 wipes to clean my surroundings on a train. (I follow the same routine on planes, equally dirty.)
